How is the reckless driving in Dyersburg? We receive calls daily on reckless and/or erratic driving in Dyersburg. We attempt to locate the suspected reckless and/or erratic driver, unfortunately many times are not able to apprehend the violator. How does an officer determine driving to be reckless? The primary criteria is section (a) of TCA: 55-10-205. There are other criteria that can constitute reckless driving as noted below:
(c) (1) Any motor vehicle operator who knowingly ignores a clearly visible and adequate flood warning sign or barricade and drives into a road area that is actually flooded commits reckless driving. In addition to the penalties imposed pursuant to subsection
[Acts 1955, ch. 329, § 57; T.C.A., § 59-858; Acts 1989, ch. 591, § 112; 2007, ch. 308, § 1; 2008, ch. 986, § 1.]
Does drag racing occur in Dyersburg? Yes, it does. We receive calls of person drag racing in the city frequently as well. How is drag racing defined according to the Tennessee Code Annotated? Below is how it is defined:
[Acts 1959, ch. 115, § 2; T.C.A., § 59-1041; Acts 1986, ch. 842, § 14; 1989, ch. 591, § 112; 2006, ch. 971, § 4.]
As officers, we attempt to proactively combat the problems of reckless driving and drag racing. Just recently we have encountered people driving reckless and even drag racing through residential neighborhoods. In one particular instance, one of the violators caused property damage to the lawn and landscaping of a local resident.
As a police department we truly believe in the COP (Community Oriented Policing) philosophy in which we work together with the community to solve and detour criminal activity. Many residents of our city have helped provide viable information in making our city a safer place to live. It takes all of us working together to provide this safe environment.
In an attempt to further combat the problem of reckless driving and drag racing in our city, some residents have volunteered to assist us. With the increase of video surveillance and security cameras in our society we have the capability to capability to capture criminal activity on video now. In the event that criminal activity is captured on video, we as a police department will investigate and possibly file charges on the criminal activity. I have spoken with some city residents that have agreed to assist us in fighting crime in this manner. In the event that other citizens are able to assist us in combating crime, please contact us at any time. We are always available and ready to serve you!

Cadizpub, do you remember when you had to overhaul the engine after a car got 40 or 50 thousand miles on it........... put in new piston rings........ always having to adjust the points,,,,,,,,,,,, and change the plugs.... I have a 1996 Toyota pickup, bought new, with 130,000 miles on it and I have done absolutely nothing, NOTHING, to it............ I expect to get 300,000 miles out of it........ and tires,,,,,,,,,, rarely do i have a flat tire............ the technology of vehicles has come an awful long way in the past fifty years................. the first cool car that I had was a 1962 Chevy Impala Sports Coupe with a 283 cubic inch 8 cylinder engine in it... you could stomp it and it would push you back up against the seat........... do you remember "She's real fine, my 409.........." 58
Chevys would run........ Joe McDowell had a brown and tan 58 Chevy that ran on propane and it was mean.............Kids now don't talk about Chevys and Fords......... it's Lamborgines and BMW's......Kids nowadays have never had any grease under their fingernails......... they don't even know how to raise the hood on their cars..................
Hey, treasons, if you were at Halls, we probably ran into each other. Your mention of the old strip brings back memories of some high powered chevys, mostly a black '58 and a plain looking '50 that could outrun anything until someone protested and found out what was under the hood.
Guess there are just too many other attractions today for the young guys to bother with hopping up a vehicle. Besides, when our 49 Ford blew a tranny we could go to the junk yard and pick one up for $15. . . if we took it off.
That was a few years ago. . .
to dmaze , your comment was brainless. these police officers put their lives on the line everyday. i sure you wash your car ( if you own one that is) and eat lunch. these officers are working for the safety of everyone in dyersburg. even you with your brainless comment
The next time you catch your kid drag racing do like I did---sell his car. That seems to get their attention.
IF YOU GET CALLS EVERYDAY ABOUT RACING/ERRATIC DRIVING......YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO STOP IT....IT'S NOT LIKE DYERSBURG IS THE SIZE OF NEW YORK CITY...ALL YA GOTTA DO IS LEAVE THE CAR WASH AND HUDDLE HOUSE AND YA MIGHT BE ABLE TO STOP IT..
Drag racing.......... I didn't know that kids nowadays knew what that is........... Fifty years ago when I was a kid, they had drag races every Sunday afternoon at the old Halls Air Base drag strip....... people came from all over West Tennessee.......... the High School kids had an impromptu drag strip laid out on the bypass, starting at the Millsfield Road going west, it was a quarter of a mile to the first telephone pole on the right............ Kids would get their parents cars and drag on the strip........... When kids talked about a car..... they would always ask what it would do in a quarter of a mile............ I'm 64 years old and have fond memories of Sunday afternoon at the Halls Air Base........... So much for my childhood,,,,,,, but realistically, it is very dangerous to drag race anywhere and it is especially dangerous on residental streets....... If kids just have to drag race, they need to go down on the Great River Road where they, themselves will be the only ones put in danger, not the public,,,,,,,, Lt. Dobis,,,,,,, no laws are going to stop teenage boys from their macho ways........... it's a rite of passage into manhood.............
