New Beginnings

Posted Thursday, November 6, 2008, at 1:16 AM

The big day started pretty routinely, wake up, get ready for work, running late as usual. My husband Sandy and I had talked that morning about our schedules and when we would meet up to go to the hospital. The big event probably wouldn't happen until later in the day or so we had planned. He had to meet contractors and line up work for his employees. I had clients to see, a conference call I couldn't miss and later, lunch with the girls, which had been planned for weeks. Unfortunately, what we didn't know was that Mother Nature has her own schedule and she doesn't care what you might think you "need to do first." So after several phone calls back and forth, pushing lunch up and deciding to leave early, we got the call. We missed it. We had missed "The Big Event!" Oooops!

So we jump in the car and race to the hospital, parking at the wrong end, of course. Finally, after walking what seemed like a good ten miles we finally enter - the maternity ward. It was deserted, no one around, no noise, no babies crying. I thought we had made a wrong turn in the hospital maze somewhere. "Only one patient here today", the nurse said as she led us down the hall and into the room. All the other new grandparents were gone and the new Mom and Dad were left eating lunch alone. She offered to let us in the nursery since we were just getting there, so we jumped at the chance. There she was in all her glory, Kennedy is her name, all seven pounds, eight ounces of her and less than an hour into this world.

As we stood there in awe of the beautiful and wonderous site of this tiny soul we were jabbering back and forth. "Look at her feet. Watch her breathe. Who does she look like? Oh look, she's smiling at me." Suddenly I realized that Sandy, who had just a minute ago been doing the same was stone silent. I turned to look at him and realized this was a new beginning for him today. This big, burly, six foot, self-described tough guy was standing there with a single tear running down his cheek as he watched his first grandchild kick and squirm. I knew right then and there that life will never be the same again for any of us because now we have a tiny new life, that in an instant has wrapped her heart in ours.

That day was June 4th and today, Novmber 4th, Kennedy is five months old. She recognizes faces and tries to reach for things. She squeals with delight and is able to sit up alone. Her world is filled with wonder and hope. Today the country elected a new President on a platform of Hope. That's my wish for Kennedy, my sweet little girl. Always have Hope! And remember every day we wake up in this world brings a New Beginning!

(Kennedy is the daughter of proud parents Kevin and Whitney Hill)

Why is this woman so special to be able to tell her story in the paper?

mistyrain25, you're just as special.... Just type it in the same place that you posted your question on this blog and your story will be read by the same people who read Kim's story...............

I guess mistyrain(beautiful handle) isn't a grandma yet .I hope someday she will know what that is like. Good stories are much needed in this time of stress. Family is the most important thing ,second only to God.

In all of the hatred, politics and crime stories--isn't it nice to be able to read a story about what really matters in life? People get so hung up on all the "happenings" of todays time- they don't stop to realize what is really important in life. God blesses all of us with a new beginning everyday and I think we all should be just a little more thankful! To think of a precious new baby, and to be able to see the world through their eyes, we should all be so lucky! Great story Kim!

If anyone is interested in writing a column I'm sure the editor would be willing to talk to you about it. Just give them a call, they are always looking for different viewpoints.
