Friday night football

The official start to fall is just a few days away...but already one of fall's premier events is underway.....yes, football is alive and well in Dyersburg and Dyer County...it is just in the early stages of the season, but already both local high school football teams have had early success.

As I sat a few nights ago and watched a classic of a game between Dyersburg and Haywood, someone reminded me of a time years ago when those two teams hooked up to a standing room only crowd....that only gave me more food for thought....

Why can't and why don't we have crowds of that magnitude any more....is it because our lives have become so busy, so jammed up with all kinds of obligations that we don't take or have the time to come out on a Friday night and cheer for our own local kids putting it on the line for our high schools and for the pride of our city and our county ?

I asked a couple of people recently who I knew absolutely loved the sport of football why they didn't come to the high school games...one answered that they didn't have any kids in school any longer thus they weren't familiar with those that were wearing the black and gold....the other person answered to me that they were just plain tired from work when Friday night rolled around and just didn't want to make the effort... What about coming for the love of football and to support these youngsters who aren't on scholarship and who don't draw big, huge salaries...they are playing for the sport itself and for the pride of their school....almost every week-end, a number of people get in their vehicles and head out to college locales like Knoxville, Oxford, etc..and don't get me wrong here, there is no better way to spend a Saturday in the fall than to be in the atmosphere of a college campus on gameday....

I just want to see those same people occupying seats in Dyersburg and in Newbern and for that matter, in Halls and in Tiptonville to watch the high school game on Friday nights...I just scratch my head in amazement sometimes knowing died-in-the-wool football fans that sit at home Friday night after Friday night....yet on Saturdays and Sundays, you can"t pry them away from watching the parade of games on television....

It is still early in the football season and it appears right now that both Dyersburg and Dyer County are going to have good, exciting teams this fall...here is an idea-the next time your favorite local high school team plays at home, why don't you make an extra effort to get to the stadium...you know-you might just like what you see and you might just want to come back...wear your schools color and come on...cheer and be part of a great American tradition-high school football on Friday nights...lets re-live the days when standing room crowds were the norm, not the exception...

See you at the ball game.....

It costs 8 or 9 bucks to go to the movies..........you can't hardly eat at McDonald's for 5 bucks........... I'm just as rebel proud as you are, but I ain't cheap

If you can't afford the price you dont need to go because you have problems. Just my opinion.

Some people don't come to the games because the admission prices at many of the high school stadiums have gotten so high. $5.00 is a little pricey if you have 2 or 3 kids to take to the game with you! It's much cheaper to stay at home and listen to it on the game - I know that is not the same, but many more people would attend if the admission were $2 or $3!

Great article Mr Dawson. We have the best team in the area and we just need the fans to show up as the 12th man.

I agree! Often people wait untill playoff time to jump on the bandwagon. The community should be there week in and week out to see what it takes to get there. These kids and their coaches work very hard and represent their communities well.
