3rd Rate Toe-dance, Low-Rent Pas de Deux

Posted Friday, July 18, 2008, at 3:50 PM

With the explosion of dancing shows that has appeared on television recently, I have been moved to re-think my own terpsichorean history. I have always assumed that I can't dance, but have I been doing myself an injustice?

Most of the dancing on the television shows is almost indistinguishable from gymnastics. It is sort of like the old-school breakdancing, only it looks as though they are performing it on some plant with gravity about half that of Earth. Well, that's out of the question for me, obviously. But surely I can sort of waltz or something. Can't I? Seems like I remember doing some dancing in college. At least, I called it dancing. It was movement that took place at the same time that music was playing. And it took place in what was called a "dance club." So it must have been dancing, right?

Turns out it probably wasn't. I tried it again (alone, thank goodness). The first couple of steps were fluid enough, but it quickly degraded into a sort of staggering that was pretty unpleasant to look at. And it would only have been worse if there had been a dance partner involved, since as it was I was only involving myself and the furniture. It would have been unethical in the extreme to endanger some innocent bystander.

Too bad. Because I like to watch dancing. Oh well. I'll just have to hang loose and hope the "pogo" comes back into vogue.

Dance Dance Dance. It makes you feel good and brings back good memories. MY grandson and I have been dancing since he was tiny. We do it alone in the living room. He doesn't care if he can't do all the moves like on TV and I don't care if I don't look right dancing my old way from the 60's but we have a good time and we laugh. Isn't that what dancing is supposed to do? Make you feel good . Just don't look in the mirror. lol Dance until you smile really big. Good exercise and good for the soul. Have fun!!!

LOL!!!! My kids asked me to dance one day when they were playing music and dancing around the house........

They stopped dancing, looked at me and said "WHAT are you doing?" So I can feel for you, obviously I can not dance either!

I'm sure Johnny Duncan would like the title of your rendition........... Sorta reminds me of the joke about a baseball pitcher named Mel Fayme who wss drinking Schlitz while he was pitching....... an opponent said, "That's the beer that made Mel Fayme walk us," after he had walked in the winnning run...................
