Save the Frogs!

Posted Thursday, April 21, 2011, at 2:33 PM

Help this guy out.
No, the title of of this entry is not the answer to the Jeopardy question, "What did we do in World War II?" It is what you should do on April 29th. April 29th is Save the Frogs Day.

I did not realize that frogs needed a "save me" day, since I didn't know that frogs were in any particular danger (any more than the rest of us, anyway.) But it turns out that a quarter of the world's amphibians are close to extinction. Learn all about it at savethefrogs.com if you don't believe me.

I have had a warm spot for these cold-blooded critters since I was very young. I grew up across the road from a large set of fish ponds, and the raucous frog chorus every night was pretty spectacular. I became so used to it that when I left home for the first time I had trouble sleeping. Everything was too quiet and it freaked me out. And the little neighbors were always finding their way into the house from time to time, which led to frantic frog chases (which was fun) and occasionally shooting straight up to the ceiling out of bed when one plopped onto my leg in the middle of the night (which was less fun, but still kind of fun). Oh the laughs me and frogs had over the years! Well... I had, anyway. It's difficult to tell when a frog is amused.

Anyway, I'd like to help save them. One way I do my bit is by not eating their legs (one of the official list of "Things You Can Do," or in this case, not do). I don't eat anything's legs anymore, so it isn't like that is strictly a frog rule, but still.

I will certainly be out by the pond on April 29th letting my frog flag fly, and I encourage you to do the same.
