A spoonful of reality

Posted Wednesday, December 5, 2007, at 9:34 AM

There have been times when I was so full of myself, coaching kids, winning ballgames, and getting lots of pats on the back. But just when I thought nothing could put a damper on what I was doing something would bring me back to reality. It could be a phone call that one of my players was killed over Labor Day weekend or that my second basemans brother was close to death, dying of a cruel disease Multiple Sclerosis. It seems like the good Lord always has a way of bringing us back to what is important in life by making us step back and regroup. In each of these cases we all became closer and it really didn't matter if we won a "gold ball". Those teams still stay in touch with each other, more than most it seems and not many days go by that we don't think of the ones that are gone. I am just glad that the Lord chose me to be the one who could soothe the hurt of my players. Maybe that is my place in the coaching ranks. Some win state titles and some just grind it out and make good memories. Maybe someday I will get both. That would be sweet!!

Life is like a sine curve on an occilloscope....... it has its ups and downs........ but for most of us the triumphs and tragedies balance out...... or at least its psychologically healthy to believe that..........

Thanks for 'getting it', Steve. Now if we could only get other coaches to see that as well. The character that you instill is so much greater than just the 'skills' you teach or coach. I've seen too many kids pushed aside, or drop out of a sport because the coach didn't see the value in their need & desire to be part of the TEAM. Just wait - the glory from the 'gold ball' fades or gets dusty in the trophy case; the legacy of eternal things never deminishes & even grows brighter with time. Bless you!
