Contract... What contract?

What is a contract worth? Not much if you follow big time sports. Its hilarious how the "talking heads" make such a big deal about how much and how long a contract might be. Everybody knows that if the coach or the administration decide to parts ways the contract is immediately null and void. Funny how, in the real world, we can't walk out on a contract. If we do we probably have to pay our employer the remaining amount to get out. In the professional sports world the coach gets paid an extremely high amount and he walks out. This reminds me of an old saying that the "best job in sports is to coach the Tennessee Vols men's basketball team and lose for two years and get 2 or 3 million dollars to leave". Of course Bruce Pearl has changed that perception lately but if he decides to leave he will still get lots of money to go. It is my belief that everyone sign a one year contract and produce during that one year or you don't get another one unless it is worth less. I have some friends who played professional sports and each of them said that if an athlete signs a multi-year contract, more often than not, there will be a drop off in production until the final year of that deal. A player knows that the only thing that is important is the final year when their numbers are fresh on the minds of team owners. I know this is true. I've seen them do it. Bobby Petrino is the latest example of this. Heck, he didn't even finish the season. I haven't heard the numbers yet but I hope he had to pay some of his salary back to Atlanta. Arkansas will probably pay it for him, if he does. Maybe I will go in and tell my boss that I am leaving I expect a hefty severance package... on second thought I won't because this is the real world and not make believe world of professional sports. I guess contracts now are the modern day handshake. I just wish people would honor them like they did in the old days.

Urban Meyer didn't finish the season with Utah a few years ago, and Rich Rodriguez didn't finish the season with West Virginia this year, so why is everyone jumping on the Petrino bashing bandwagon? I guess it's just the flavor of the week for you people who think inside the box all the time. Contracts are made to be broken, and Atlanta was a DEAD END for anyone there this year. Just ask Bill Parcels, he changed his mind before ever signing a contract there AFTER he was announced as the new head coach last night.

Parcells wasn't going to be the head coach, he was going to work upstairs.

Contracts are not to keep the coach/player at a location.. they're to make it expensive for someone else to buy it out.
