Lord, give me wisdomPosted Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at 9:07 AM
As I come to the tail end of my coaching career I have come to one conclusion. My children are already on their own. I can't take the blame for their shortcomings or the errors they make. I can, however, keep them from blaming others and teach them to be ACCOUNTABLE!!!! The best thing I can do for them is to teach them that there is nothing wrong with making mistakes as long as you learn from them and take ownership of them. I heard a clip from the Vanderbilt baseball coach. The topic was 3rd baseman, Alvarez. He said that the best thing about him was that his parents held him accountable, raised him right and he did not come to Vandy with a "silver spoon" in his mouth. He added "I hate coaching players with silver spoons in their mouths." Amen Coach Corbin!!! As my oldest gets ready to go out on his own, I hope my wife and I have done a decent job of preparing him for the real world. The world needs more leaders and I hope he can become one. One who builds up those around him and not tear down. One who takes care of what he can and not be envious of others. There have been a lot of teams, in history, that have had a lot of talent and they never won because of jealousy, greed, envy, and the inability to take ownership of shortcomings. I can only hope that I can represent the type of person who will accept those things and try to build up others and not tear down.
