He's her hero

Recently, we traveled to Kentucky for a baseball showcase. This was a opportunity for my son to workout in front of several college coaches. What started out as a nervous two days wound up a lesson for my wife and I. Now, our children are just like any other siblings in that they want to kill each other most of the time and one cannot tell if they hate or love each other. What transpired at the camp warmed my soul and proved that my daughter thinks her brother "hung the moon". She sat in the heat and watched every move he made even after I asked her to go wait in the air conditioned truck. She groaned when he messed up and squirmed when he did good, all the while giving commentary to anyone around her. Needless to say everyone in Georgetown Ky. knew where Dyersburg was and who her "Bubba" was. I was moved by how she never took her eyes off of him and would ask me "Daddy did Bubba do good?" I would assure her that the coaches were not only looking at the good things but also how he handled his mistakes. This would calm her for a while but at the next station he would go to she would start the squirming and questions all over again. At the end of the day she would assure him that he was the best on the field that day. He would groan but a muffled "Thanks" could be heard. I had always heard the phrase "blood is thicker than water" but I saw it first hand on those couple of days. I don't know if it is different for teenage boys but I can see a little from him toward her when she pitches in her softball games but it is usually done as a sarcastic criticism. I still can see him squirm when he goes to her games too. This is when I know that I am a lucky Dad and have been blessed with children that, for the time being, are caring and good people. Hopefully they will stay that way and will always cheer for their heroes, even if it happens to be their sibling.
