As one grows older there seems to be many things that change. Some for the better and others, not so good. One that I have found that is very good is the friendships that started when I was in college. Sports brought us together as roommates and time has only made these friendships more precious. I just got back from a golf outing, with some special friends, in Paducah. We met at The Silos Golf Course and played 36 holes and, as we said many times throughout the round, it seemed like we were never apart. The jabs were just as sharp and the stories were just as funny. It is hard to believe that the stories, we talked about, were over 20 years old. They are the stories that started the bond of friendship and some of the stories were of times that brought us closer at the time and built the trust that only solidifies relationships. When kids go to college they have no idea that the people they live with will become more than just friends. They become family. We had 5 guys in our dorm room at Union University and every day was an event. Whether it was hitting golf balls over the dorm or having a golf course set up in the room. Each day was packed with fun and not a whole lot of studying. At least not by me. There were bets that nobody could bench press 50 lbs. 100 times and dead snakes put under the covers of unknowing roommates. All done in fun but wound up forging the bonds that would last a lifetime. Some of the best times were the clothing trades we made at 2 in the morning with a roomie that refused to be a preppy kid any more. We traded torn sweatshirts for IZOD shirts and thought who needs the mall!! We would go to one another's homes and stayed the night and got close with each other's families and eat home cooked meals that were sooo good. These are just a few things that I can print that made college so special. Never knowing that 24 years later we would be playing golf and taking a trip back in time. I guess this keeps one young in the mind. There is nothing wrong with reliving the past as long as you continue to live in the present. Cal, Barry, Greg, I hope that as my son starts his college career, this fall, he can find friends as good and as true as you have been and that he can trust his friends as I do you. All these things could not have happened if it were not for sports. Baseball and basketball brought us together and our fondness for each other has only nurtured that bond. Thank you for your friendships and I will always treasure those times that we can get together and enjoy each other's company. By the way, if anyone is looking for a good golf trip. The Silos Golf Course in Kevil, Ky. is a great trip. The rates are very reasonable and the course is challenging but fair. It is also located in the beautiful countryside in the Great Commonwealth of Kentucky. Give it a try. You wont be sorry.
