Established in 1941, Reelfoot Lake’s Wildlife Refuge covers roughly 11,000–acres of property surrounding the lake and is home to numerous species of ducks and birds, as well as deer and other local wildlife. Refuge Ranger Tara Dowdy has been with Reelfoot Lake National Wildlife Refuge for 11 years. Like the park, Dowdy says the Refuge also hosts numerous annual programs, however, their work lies mainly with the safety and wellness of the animals.
