Faced with a crushing $12 million debt, the Yorkville Telephone Cooperative board Monday night approved a measure requesting the firm's 3,400 members vote to sell its assets to a Kentucky company.
A public meeting for the cooperative's members is scheduled for 6 p.m. April 27 at the Yorkville Community Center to vote on the consolidation.
"While we worked very hard to make things work at Yorkville, it became apparent that the cooperative could not remain financially viable as it was," said Kerry D. Watson, regulatory manager for West Kentucky Rural Telephone Cooperative Corp., based in Mayfield, Ky.
