Lost emu roped on South Main

A wayward emu spotted traipsing north on Main Street on Wednesday morning was captured by animal control officers after it wandered into a fenced enclosure.

Green and Sons Detail owner John Green was sitting at his desk in the business at 1290 S. Main St. at about 10:45 a.m. when he eyed the five-foot-tall bird.

"It was out by the mailbox, just walking north," said Green. "So I called 911 and told them I'd seen an ostrich walking up the street. She said she'd been a dispatcher for 10 years and had never heard of such a thing."

Police arrived in the area and began to scan the open fields off Davis Road and east of Main Street for the creature. The Green and Sons workers, who had gathered in the parking lot to watch the emu, informed police it had walked behind the Carol Harris Co. building across the street. When officers warily moved to the scene, they found the emu had walked into a fenced-in back lawn. The bird evidently had walked through the open gate into the enclosure and couldn't find its way out.
