According to the Dyersburg Police report, W.G. McElrath, 131 Bowen Lane, said he was sitting in his living room when he heard his four-month-old puppy, which was chained to the front porch, begin to yelp.
When McElrath looked outside, he saw a pit bill attacking his pet. After repeatedly beating the pit with a skillet to no effect, McElrath retrieved an eight-inch butcher knife and began to stab the pit bull.
When police arrived, the butcher knife was lodged in the pit bull's shoulder and the pit bull was dead. McElrath said he stabbed the dog eight times before it died. His puppy was whimpering.
The pit pull belonged to Terrence McLin, who has been incarcerated in the Dyer County Jail since police arrested him Nov. 13 on a drug possession charge. A McLin family member said the pit bull had been chained in the back yard and did not know how the dog got loose.
Dyer County animal control officers took both animals. McElrath's dog was put to sleep after suffering the injuries from the pit bull.

Yall need to hurry up and get the dog ordiance in place before a human gets killed from these vicious animal owners.
Kudos to the police for making a full investigation on their first visit and discovering the dog. Good thing there wasn't a child in the bedroom.
Kudos to the police????? Sounds like someone from the police department patting themselves on the back because there's nothing in the article about what newspub is saying. What first visit? How many visits were there?
Discovering the dog? The homeowner pointed out the dog that he had killed.
Child in the bedroom? The dog was killed outside for jumping on the other dog tied to the porch? What are you talking about?
this is for people that bad mouth pit bulls. as a owner of one i am not taking up for the one that hurt the puppy and i feel bad for the owner of the puppy. but not all pit bulls are bad it is just in the way that the dogs are trained and raised.. and the person that was taking care of the pit bull should take full responsabilty for what has happened because they were the ones watching the dog..
The city should form a committee to study dog vioence and let this gentleman chair the committee!
THE BREED SHOULD BE STOPPED NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THESE DOGS I HAD A FEW AND NO MATTER WHAT I DID FROM PRO TRAINING TO 24-7 WATCHING OF THE DOG THEY ARE NOT TO BE TRUSTED A DOG IS SUPPOSED TO BE A HAPPY THING A FRIEND TO MANKIND NOT SOMETHING THAT COULD SNAP AT ANY MINUTE
onemorebet ... i highly doubt you know anything about pit bulls if you think they should be banned .. and you obviously are lying if you say youve had them and had them trained .. i will quote ceaser milan on this .. if you dont trust your pet , no matter what breed it is , your pet will not trust you .. i have had pit bulls for years .. and ive only had one bite someone .. however , there is a story behind that .. he was 9 months old when i got him , and had also been fought .. i blame myself for not being able to change him , but ... thats the way it is sometimes .. you dont ban the breed , you ban stupid idiots like yourself !!!!! sigh .. when will people learn .. its not the dog , a simple poodle can bite just as quickly as a rott pit mastiff or any other type of " aggressive " breed .. and when i say aggressive , i mean thats what you ignorant people that dont know anything about them call it.. to me , a pit bull is the best dog to own , even a rott or dobi .. even a chow chow .. they are misunderstood .. how can you say that about a pit bull anyways , wasnt it a pit bull that fought in the war with us ???? back in the 1900's to mid 20th century , pit bull were known as the " number one family pet " .. get your facts straight please ..
