DSCC will host a former Fulbright scholar and internationally known environmental historian to place the current global warming movement in historical perspective on Feb. 18. Dr. Ranjan Chakrabarti will deliver a lecture at 1:30 p.m. today in the Learning Resource Center on the Dyersburg campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Chakrabarti, a professor at Jadavpur University in Kolkata, India, will present "Tropics, Cyclones and Early Meteorology: Historicizing Global Warming." In the presentation, he will discuss the first recorded tsunami, which swept over the Indian Ocean in 1737 and the death and destruction that followed. This event provides early meteorological knowledge and shows a connection with deforestation. Through this, he will point out the need to map tropical cyclones to ensure the safety and movement of ships.

Chakrabarti is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of the History of Sport and secretary of the Association of South Asian Environmental Historians. The author of several books, he has taught and lectured at dozens of colleges in the United States, the United Kingdom and India including Brown, London, Exeter and Calcutta universities.

For more information, call DSCC international program coordinator Zaria Garcia at 286-3377 or e-mail her at garcia@dscc.edu.
