Firefighters from Newbern, Tatumville and Trimble rush to fight the flames that consumed the 108 N. Grayson St. home around midnight Thursday.
One of Newbern's historic homes burned on Thursday.

The residence of Mike and Randie Bohannon, at 108 N. Grayson St., was reported at 7:01 p.m. to be smoking from the roof.

The house, on a large one-acre lot common to the city's earliest residences, is locally known as the "Riley Cole" home.

The sprawling 3,000-square-foot bungalow-style house proved tough for firefighters to battle, with closet and small spaces throughout the upper floor.

The Newbern Fire Department was first on the scene, and later called for manpower from the East Dyer County Volunteer Fire Department and the Trimble Volunteer Fire Department.

Newbern Police cars blocked Grayson Street from Main Street and off Highway 77 on the north end of the road for the entire time of the fight against the blaze, which continued through the morning hours.

with all the other stuff happening on grayson street I'd almost say this was arson? Have they released saying why it burnt? or how?

Is there a fund anywhere to help the family?

Thank you.

When ever a home or business burns the first thought is Arson. It could be accidental, or pyromania; even faulty wiring. But at a time like this life for some poor family can be as destroyed as their home or business.
