The contest, after a quiet first inning, was never in doubt as Dyer County cruised to a relatively easy, 10-2 win to remain perfect in District 13 and improve to 6-1 overall.
Dyer County head coach Preston Ozment sent ace hurler Derek Sims to the mound and he was simply more than the Cavaliers could handle. The senior threw six complete innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, fanning five and walking one before teammate Mike Gray fanned the side in the seventh to preserve the victory.
"I don't think Derek had his best stuff today. I've seen him throw better but it's been six or seven days since he threw last. He's used to throwing on three days rest but we are trying to give him more of break so that he will be fresh at the end," said Ozment. "Overall, he kept the ball down, pitched well enough to win and did the things he is capable of doing."
Crockett County sent Blake Campbell to the mound to start the game, and while the senior made quick work of the Choctaws in the first inning, there was trouble brewing on the horizon.
In the top of the second with Shea Thomas at third with two outs, the Choctaws caught fire. Dylan Haycraft began the rally with a smoking grounder to deep short to plate Thomas for an early 1-0 advantage.
After Tyler Roberson singled to right to put runners at first and second, Cody Starks sent a blistering shot to deep right field to score Haycraft, putting runners at first and third for lead off hitter Chad Gammons. The junior came through with an RBI-single before Morgan Bowser cleared the bases with a hard-hit single as the Choctaws went on top, 5-0, thanks to five runs on five hits in the inning.
After allowing a leadoff single in the bottom half of the inning, Sims settled in and made quick work of the Cavaliers, getting out of the inning on 11 pitches.

The Cavaliers plated one run in the third, but the damage had been done. The Choctaws plated three additional runs in the fifth before the Cavaliers added one more in their half of the inning.
Gray entered in the seventh to slam the door shut as the Choctaws completed the season sweep, winning 10-2.
"I thought we swung the bat well today but at times we left some guys stranded out there and we have to work on that. Overall we hit the ball hard and again the back part of our lineup came through and did their job. As a coach you are always happy when the back part of your lineup is ripping the baseball and today they did that," added Ozment.
Dyer County will face Adamsville at 3:15 on Thursday in Savannah at the Courier Classic.
