Bowyer will recommend to the Board of Regents that DSCC's title become "Tennessee Western Community College."
The decision will be brought before the DSCC Foundation Board on Tuesday,
The Tennessee Board of Regents later in the week and, eventually, the state legislature.
Bowyer made the announcement at the school's annual Spring Conference
Board of Regents Chancellor Dr. Charles Manning said that the Board of Regents is expected to take some action on the recommendation at a meeting scheduled for the end of next week.
"(Dyersburg State Community College) has grown from its beginnings," said Manning. "To choose a name that is more indicative to that whole region makes a lot of sense to me and that is what they are endeavoring to do."
DSCC was established nearly 40 years ago with 588 students on its Dyersburg campus. The institution now has four locations, serving approximately 2,600 students across more than 10 counties. Although members of the Dyer County community contribute more than any other community in the college's service area, Dyer County residents currently make up only 27 percent of the student body.
In 2007, the Covington campus overtook the main Dyersburg campus in student population, with 751 full-time students compared to 684 taking courses in Dyersburg.
Representatives of DSCC addressed the governing boards of Dyersburg and Dyer County in October to explain their intentions of conducting a study by Memphis-based marketing firm archer>malmo. Focus groups, town hall-style meetings, an online poll, and one-on-one meetings with constituents, students, supporters and stakeholders throughout the region have since been completed by the firm. Archer>malmo representatives also completed research and relied on the firm's extensive background in product naming and identification for the study.
Representatives of both the college and archer>malmo have stressed a desire for an open process since the beginning of the study.
Tennessee Western Community College was chosen from a list of five prospects determined by the study. Other names on the list included Cooper Community College, Lannom Community College, Lipford Community College and Eagle Community College.

Boy, this story got yanked off the front page online in a hurry! Hmmmmmmmm.
Who would hire you if you told them you went to Western State? Everyone says Leave it DSCC. Is Dr Bowyer Deaf or does she just not listen and care about the citizens of Dyersburg. The Chamber works hard to promote Dyersburg and now she wants to take that off the college name. Maybe we need to take her name off the List of employees of DSCC and she needs to go to Western State.. And the ones on this committee that want to have others sing their praises about what all they do for Dyersburg, then WHY do they want the name Dyersburg dropped from the college??? Anyone got any answers?
What was wrong with DSCC? It started as a local college and was able to expand but the name should be able to stay the same. Changing the name will take the local presence out of it and make people wonder what it is. Tennessee Western does sound like a prison or some type of facility. I think the name should have stayed the same, but that is inevitable now. Anyway, a lot of money will have to be spent to change to name and people will still say Dburg State....
What was wrong with DSCC?
LEAVE IT AT DYERSBURG STATE,THAT'S WERE IT ALL STARTED
Sounds like Cowboy College to me! West Tennessee Community College sounds better. But I didn't think there was anything wrong with Dyersburg State Community College. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!

Sounds like a mental institution or a prison to me.
That's funny, lwalker, but it worked for Illinois Central RR for a hundred years. Anyway, West Tenn has been used a million times. How about Walker U?
I'm sure all of the people wonderful who live in Tennesse western think this is a name great. I think I'll also start putting all of my adjectives after my nouns. It makes me sound so much intelligent more.
