According to witnesses and preliminary work by investigators, Aundra Vernal Gilton, 35, 635 Jones St., was shot once in the right leg while he was in the residence by an assailant who opened the front door and fired the shot from a handgun.
Gilton and other witnesses inside the residence did not know the identity of the suspected shooter, said police.
Gilton was transported by ambulance to Dyersburg Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for the injury.
The shooting is the second in Newbern in little more than a month. On Feb. 27, three teenagers were charged with the shooting death of 20-year-old expectant mother Tamara Brown of 401 N. Grayson St.
