House won't get resolution on new name

Sunday, March 30, 2008
State Rep. Craig Fitzhugh, who represents the geographic area that includes the main Dyersburg State Community College campus, said he is "in no rush to judgment" to vote on the college's name change.

The Tenn-essee Board of Regents on Friday voted to change DSCC's name to "Tennessee Western Community College."

"I've received quite a bit of comment [against] it," said Fitzhugh on Saturday. "And just to be fair, the vast majority are running against it."

Fitzhugh has had the actual document for the name change to submit for a House vote since January. After the TBR approved the name change, Chancellor Charles Manning is expected to transmit the decision of the board to Fitzhugh to place the bill on the House calendar for a vote.

Fitzhugh said he has not yet received the decision, but will not present it for a House vote.

State Sen. Mark Norris (R-Collierville) has the resolution to present to the Senate.

Fitzhugh said the comments he had received against the name change "with the Dyer County Commission and city boards voicing their disapproval means there is a lack of consensus to pursue this at this time. We need some consensus if this thing is going to happen. We don't have that now."

He said very little comment has come from the Covington area or the area surrounding Dyer County where DSCC has facilities.

Fitzhugh said he recognized the want to make the DSCC mission "as broad and expansive as possible. But Dyersburg and Dyer County stepped up in 1969 and made the commitment, as it continues to do today. Right now I'm not inclined to make any kneejerk reaction either way. I don't think it has to be done at this point in time."

Isn't Rep, Fitzhugh wonderful?? I have sent many letters and emails, and he is the only person who has listened. Please email him with your comments; he may not read the comment section of the state Gazette. His email address is:

rep.craig.fitzhugh@legislature.state.tn....

Also email Senator Norris because the vote will go before the senate too.

They ask that you please leave your name, address, and phone number in your email.

Last week I posted that the city officials should send a letter of dis-approval, and it appears they were doing just that:

Quote from above:

Fitzhugh said the comments he had received against the name change "with the Dyer County Commission and city boards voicing their disapproval means there is a lack of consensus to pursue this at this time. We need some consensus if this thing is going to happen. We don't have that now." end quote

Way to go city officials......

Fitzhugh for Gov'ner!

Thanks to Representative Fitzhugh for listening to the people. Now, isn't that a pleasant approach to government! We hope others follow his lead.

Also, if the Dyersburg State name survives any other attempts to change the name --- that means we won't have to worry about UT-Martin with campuses in Ripley, Jackson, Paris, Parsons, Dickson, Selmer, and Knoxville from having to change its name to 'All over Tennessee University.'

And, Bethel College in McKenzie with campuses in Nashville, Memphis, Clarksville, Jackson and Chattanooga can stay 'Bethel' instead of 'Six City College.'

And, Union University, with a campus in Germantown won't have to change its name to 'Union Plus One University.'

And...heaven forbid that national setups such as the University of Phoenix with campuses in 38 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Canada doesn't have to change its name to 'We're trying to be Everywhere University.'

Go DSCC! Dyersburg State Community College, since 1969! Let's keep it that way and be proud!

Thank you Representative Fitzhugh!!! If you uphold what is adamantly the citizens' desire - to keep Dyersburg State Community College as is - you will receive my support in doing eveything possible to get you re-elected. Thank you for listening to your supporters.

Finally, a Politician that listens. Thats more than we can say for the Board of Regents. If Mr. Fitzhugh listens this time, I will do all I can to make sure he is re-elected. We need more men like him. Thank you Mr Fitzhugh for doing what we elected you to do.LISTEN, and you are doing just that....
