The Tennessee Board of Regents on Friday approved without discussion changing Dyersburg State Community College's title to "Tennessee Western Community College."
Board communications director Mary Morgan said the unanimous vote took place during the new business for the meeting, which was held at Chattanooga State Community College.
The measure must be passed by the General Assembly to become law.
Morgan said the decision came after a voice vote, "so I don't know whether all of the regents voted or not."
Thirteen of the 18 members of the Regents board were present for the meeting.

No, it's not just you......I don't know why they felt the name needed to be changed in the first place..........
Please, people, you don't understand. Regents making such decisions know far better the likes and dislikes of the common man. Haven't you learned that yet? Quite trying to do things in like that are ruled by common sense. These people know better!
Makes no sense, will be tough for the cheerleaders to spit that one out
What a joke. Amazing how eggheads are the first to follow an object falling off a cliff. Enjoy the rodeo! Yippie-ki-AAAA, pardners!
I dont understand why the name should be changed. Are people ashamed to be part of Dyersburg and to have a school named after our home town. I am proud to be from such a small community and say yes we have a college here. Noone is satisfied they always have to change.
no matter what the name is changed to, everyone will still call it Dyersburg State.
WHAT A WASTE....DYERSBURG WANTS RECOGNITION, SO WHAT DO YOU DO?...RENAME THE COLLEGE....NOW., ASK SOMEONE WHERE IS TENNESSEE WESTERN IS?...BUT HEY THAT WILL JUST LEAVE DYERSBURG NAME FOR NATIONALLY BEING KNOWN FOR THUGS, DRUGS, AND CRIME...TOOK AWAY ONE OF THE FEW POSITIVE THINGS THERE....
With a name like Tennessee Western, are they going to offer bullriding and cow tippin? Way to go D'burg!!! Another black-eye for the community.
hey why not call it northwest tennessee community college sounds better than tennessee western dont it plus it is located in northwestern tennessee so are all of its satalite buildings arent they also that name sounds like something you would call a mental hospital to me i also dont see nothing wrong with dyersburg state that is were the main college is located plus look at jackson state community college they have students from all over west tennessee but they are still jackson state community college just a thought regents
HOW ABOUT John Holden Community College lol lol
1000 NAMES OUT THERE AND THAT IS THE ONE THEY PICK? I think DSCC is the better name.
If people in Ripley and surrounding areas don't want to attend DSCC then let them attend Jackson State Comm College. They could drive to Memphis to one of those, or go to Martin. It does sound like Boliver's Western State. LOL Sad SAD SAD. What a waste of money - changing all the stationary, books etc. Look at the cost. Leave it as DSCC! Please...
Looks like MANY, MANY of the comments of the people who reject this name change have been taken off...only showing the ones they want to show. However, my daughter will be attending a new college next semester, because she feels the college makes decisions without listening to the students and parents of the college. I paid for my daughter's tuition, and I would have thought they would have at least let us vote.
I attended Dyersburg State for two years before transferring to UTM. I treasure my time at DSCC and it is still dear to my heart. I am a native of Dyersburg and am proud to have such a quality college located in my hometown. Changing the name will subtract a lot of community imput and association with the college.
