State seeks to cancel diversion for former Tiptonville firefighters

Thursday, April 3, 2008
Two men who were sentenced in a series of Tiptonville fires could face additional sanctions.

Both of the men -- James Blackburn and his grandson, Brandon Blackburn -- were placed on two years of pretrial diversion in September. The district attorney general's office has filed petitions asking that the diversion be terminated.

If Circuit Court Judge Lee Moore agrees to end diversion, James Blackburn will face one arson charge and Brandon Blackburn will face two arson charges.

Both men had been ordered to pay restitution and court costs, but neither had paid anything by Jan. 30, when the district attorney filed the petitions.

James Blackburn, who served as the city's fire chief from 1995 to 2006, had been ordered to pay $4,600 restitution and $925 in court costs. He paid $500 on Feb. 26.

Brandon Blackburn, who served as a volunteer firefighter, was ordered to pay $14,950 in restitution and $1,434 in court costs.

He made his first payment of $200 on March 24.

Both of the Blackburns are scheduled to appear April 22 in Lake County Circuit Court.

I don't see My2Centz comment. I guess it must have been removed.

My2Centz, If you would take time to read the article you would realize that the Blackburns were charged with arson. Two other firefighters were also charged. These men are no longer on the department. The so called "Good Ole Boy" system is not Lake County's fault. Why don't you call the District Attorney for Lake County and ask him why he slapped them on the wrist. His office is in Dyersburg. Get your facts straight before you comment please! It is not the "Good Ole Boy" network, it is the DA that keeps slapping the wrist!
