The Dyer County Choctaws opened the last week of regular season baseball with a match-up against the Chargers of Westview after taking two out of three games in last weekend's Good Day 2 Play Invitational in Creekwood. The Choctaws moved one game closer to clinching the regular season district title with a 10-6 victory over Westview on a beautiful Monday night in Newbern.

"The regular season title means nothing, it all comes down to next week's district tournament," said Dyer County head coach Preston Ozment.

The hot hitting Choctaws picked up exactly were they left off over the weekend by putting six runs on the board in the first inning. After a one out walk to Tyler Roberson, Shea Thomas followed with a RBI double off the left center field fence to give the Choctaws a 1-0 lead. Jordan Patterson collected 3 RBI's in his first at bat of the ballgame with a hard hit triple off the center field fence, stretching the lead to 4-0. Dyer County added two more runs in the inning on two RBI singles by B.A. Davis and Tyler Lyons, giving the Choctaws a 6-0 lead after the first inning. Derek Sims took the mound for the Choctaws and the dominant right hander improved to 6-0 on the season with the win.

"Derek came out and gave us another solid performance, and he always comes out and gives us a chance to win," said Ozment.

The Chargers put up two runs in the third inning, the only inning Sims faced any serious threat in the ballgame. In the bottom half of the third the Choctaws offense went back to work, starting with a leadoff single by Sims followed by a RBI single by Davis, his second of the game. After Chad Gammons and Tyler Lyons both drew walks to load the bases, Roberson delivered with a two RBI single of his own to make the score 9-2. Dyer County added one more run in the frame off a sacrifice fly by Thomas, stretching the lead to 10-2 after three complete in the books.

Sims cruised throughout the next three innings, before being replaced by Mike Gray in the top half of the seventh after surrendering a leadoff single to start the inning. The Chargers added four runs in the top half of the seventh before Gray could settle in and record a groundout to end the game, and seal the 10-6 victory for the Choctaws.

Dyer County will travel to Martin today for a rematch with the Chargers, and a chance to seal the regular season district title with a win.

"Westview is a better team than they should today, and should come out tomorrow ready to play," said Ozment.
