Choral Society concert is Thursday

Wednesday, April 30, 2008
Dyersburg State Community College and the Dyersburg Arts Council will present the Dyersburg Choral Society for the group's annual spring concert on Thursday, May 1.

The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cumberland Presbyt-erian Church. Admission is free.

The program features a wide variety of music, including sacred and secular works and is designed to appeal to almost everyone.

The group is under the direction of Floyd Speck with Carolyn Burnett as accompaniest.

Opening the concert is "With a Voice of Singing" by English composer Martin Shaw, followed by "Those Who Wait Upon the Lord," composed by the group's director, Floyd Speck, and Stephen Schwartz's "When You Believe" from the movie Prince of Egypt.

The three works that follow are traditional arrangements familiar to most ears.

"Kumbaya," known to most listeners as a camp song, is arranged by Paul Sjofund in a beautiful flowing setting; "Down By the Riverside," arranged by Brad Printz, gives new life to the familiar Irish ballad.

A medley of songs from the Broadway musical "Jekyll and Hyde," by Frank Wildhorne and Leslie Bricusse, is next on the program. This contains many of the best songs from the musical including "Once Upon A Dream" and "This Is the Moment," perhaps two of the most popular.

In a total change of pace, "The Cat Came Back," a novelty song by Henry Miller, follows. Rounding out the program will be Roger Wilson's arrangement of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and the group's traditional closing number, "Let There Be Peace on Earth," by Sy Miller and Jill Jackson.

Membership in the Dyersburg Choral Society is open to everyone. No auditions are required. Rehearsals are held in the music room at Dyersburg State Community College at 7-9 p.m. each Thursday during the spring and fall semesters. DSCC students may take this as a credit course for a fee. Choral Society members who do not participate as a credit course pay a voluntary membership fee.
