Sheriff requests more staff to aid heavier demands

Wednesday, May 7, 2008
Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Holt requested additional employees be added to the Sheriff's Department during the next budget year at a meeting of the County Law Enforcement Committee on Thursday.

Holt and County Law Enforcement Committee members Connie Apple Evans, Debbie Bradshaw Hart, Benny Spain, Tom Reasons, Jimmy Wells and County Mayor Richard Hill met in the conference room of the Dyer County Jail to go over requests and preliminary changes in the sheriff's budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

The changes included adding two new patrolmen, one investigator and three deputies for additional Courthouse security. Enhanced security at the Courthouse will require one part-time and two full-time deputies.

"It has been 14 years since the investigation staff has been increased," said Holt. "There were four here when I came here in 1994. (Now, we have)16 guys working patrol, 24 hours a day."

"You are undermanned," said Reasons.

Other requested increases and additions to next year's budget include new leases to replace patrol cars, additions to compensate for gasoline prices and inflation in general operating costs.

"I see a total increase of about $300,000 between both," said Reasons.

Hill figured the difference between the 2007-2008 budget and the 2008-2009 budget at $245,115.

"(And) you are under budget (so far)," said Wells.

"For 14 years, I've never broken the budget. I may have broken line items, but not the budget."

"I admire your frugality in coming in under the budget," said Reasons. "But I would like to see the county get more of its share of the 911 money. The city of Dyersburg and the city of Newbern are much more liberal with their expenditures of 911 funds. As a member of the county government, I would like to see the county get its share."

At the meeting, Holt also gave committee members a report on the activities of the Sheriff's Department in the past year:

* 2,063 criminal warrants logged, with 1,936 served by the department

* 1,902 civil warrants entered, with 1,814 served

* 13,464 dispatch calls logged

* 4,644 bookings processed through the jail. (Of those, about 2,000 first-time bookings. Others include weekenders and repeat offenders.)

* Average jail population for past year: 173 per day.

I would like to know why the Sheriff's Department has fewer officers than the DPD when the Sheriff's Dept. has more area to cover. I am sure they answer just as many calls and arrest just as many people as the DPD. In my opinion the few additions the Sheriff has asked for is not enough. The county commissioners need to wake up and provide the Sheriff with the staff he needs to keep everyone safe.

If the city of Dyersburg were overbudgeted. Why are there so many patrol car's sitting around at different location's not being used except for a deterent for robberies and slowing down speeder's. I think camera's would be cheaper by the dozen. I can see leaving one at bank's for show. However, isn't this a waste of tax payer's money. We, they, buy new car's while the old one's are camera stand's. I think this is a waste of my money. Do away with all the car's going to waste and help with our national debt's.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
