Police officer suspended

Wednesday, May 7, 2008
A Dyersburg Police patrolman was suspended on Wednesday for referring to his supervisor in a negative term.

People familiar with the matter said James Fogarty was suspended for day over the incident.

Fogarty declined to comment on the matter.

This is just crap.. I have known Fogarty for a long time and find him to be one of the more honest police officer. I'm sure the supervisor had some kind of ill feelings toward Fogarty and decided to show he can send someone home. People in authority sometimes like to show what they can do at the job because otherwise outside the job they are a worthless loser and actually ignored. The supervisor feels insecure outside of work so at work he tries to boss people around in order to fill the empty gap he has where his balls use to be.

You know what i think about Waller? Hes a stand up guy and a stand up cop- He is a cop because he deserves to be one. Unless you know him then don't judge him! I think he takes his job serious and fair to everyone- yeah maybe a little cocky at times, but tell me a cop that isn't. How about everyone lay off unless you know what you are talking about- had a bad experience with him- maybe it is that you were the problem!!!

GROW UP PEOPLE , THESE OFFICERS PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE EVERY DAY. THE PEDDY STUFF NEEDS TO STOP . THING NEED TO SHAPE UP BETWEEN OFFICERS. YALL ARE A TEAM AND YOU COVER EACH OTHERS BACKS. OFFICERS HAVE ENOUGH TO STRESS OVER. I THINK YOU ALL DO A WONDERFUL JOB AND SHOULD BE RESPECTED FOR WHAT U DO. GOOD JOB DYERSBURG PD.

fire him and tell the babies to shape up and be good cops or fire the old hands who give you a hard time about being the boss.

The police department in Dyersburg looks like a side show. Is Barney Fife running things there? If so, someone pease take away his bullet.

4 Officers Suspended and publicly humiliated over stupid crap? that sounds like a very bad attempt at managment by a person that has no clue how to run a business. Everyone knows Isbell does the day to day operations and keeps the department running, Ledbetter just has his name on the letterhead and likes to push his weight around when he sees an opening. I think he had his lunch stolen as a kid too many times and is now trying to compensate! Just retire and turn over the reigns to a real chief already. As for Officer Fogarty's comment...I don't know what was said so I can't say much, but if that person deserved it than so be it...

Sounds like Mr. Fogarty had the guts to speak his mind about what he feels is right. Good for him! Judging from the recent history of the DPD Mr. Fogarty is lucky the supervisor didn't whine like Waller and go sign a warrant.

The first part of my comment is directed at sid36us, when did weight or fitness come into the issue at hand here? Maybe you are trying to compensate for some personal shortcoming by using this to lash out instead of the matter at hand. Now that that has been said, I feel like if you have superior officers that treat their people appropriately and conduct themselves in a professional manner (yes even in front of the "criminals" because you have a responsibility to act in a certain way when you are an officer.) For example, the staff will have zero respect for a supervisor that is harder on his staff than he is on the criminal element in the city. You still don't have to like him but if there is appropriate behavior that instills respect by the supervisor, the working relationship will be better for it. As I understand the comment was made in private, so truly it was a private matter, not something to be paraded around because someone's feelings got hurt. As I learned growing up, sometimes the truth hurts. Fogarty is a good officer and it would not be in the city's best intrest to push him away with public reprimand while allowing another officer that is in charge to continue to be way too easy on the people he is supposed to be protecting us from.

RESPECT your supervisor and others. I don't care who you are. Freedom of speech has nothing to do with this case. It's called respect. And WOW!! DPD is cleaning up the Williamson mess. GO Ledbetter!! It's time for CHANGE!!

BOY....WHAT IF WE ALL WERE REPRIMANDED FOR SPEAKING NEGATIVE ABOUT OUR SUPERVISOR.....WE BETTER START WHISPERING.....YIKES

-- Posted by DMASE on Thu, May 8, 2008, at 3:20 PM

I always love it when someone pipes up and tries to justify someones comment by talking about freedom of speech. You are 100% correct we do have freedom of speech and I am proud of it, however, actually try reading about freedom of speech and defamation. Freedom of speech does not mean you can say whatever you want when you want and never assume any responsibility for your comments.

If and Officer conducts himself in an insubordinate manner he should be suspended for more than a day…..This Officer got off light……If he talks to his supervisor inappropriately what do you think he will say to the Average Joe on the street.

-- Posted by HCHS on Thu, May 8, 2008, at 1:07 PM

An honest cop gives an honest answer about something? Someone who actually cares about our town? I don't think he should have been suspended. Reprimand him maybe if the comment was made public but we are forgetting even public officials have the right to free speech. I think the chain of command all the way up to the police chief needs to reevulated if they are trying to push this subject. I wouldnt want to lose our best officer over this.

-- Posted by hummer316 on Thu, May 8, 2008, at 1:05 PM

How many officers have been suspended in the past year? There is obviously a problem here. I would think the supervisor would have the tools to handle the situation without going to this extreme but, we don't have the entire story either.

This all just seems a little bit extreme, is our police dpeartment out of control or is managment? In my opinion someone needs to take a look.

-- Posted by Northern Lights on Thu, May 8, 2008, at 11:56 AM

what was the comment?

-- Posted by exresident on Thu, May 8, 2008, at 11:33 AM

Fogarty is a good officer, cares about the public and does good work. To be suspended for a comment? Was it made in public? If it was in public, a reprimand maybe, in private a verbal warning. Sounds like its getting out of hand.

you know sid36us you don't have to bring up someones weight or them being fit into this.that has nothing to do with this article and i'm sure your not perfect now are ya????

-- Posted by tnmama on Thu, May 8, 2008, at 8:00 AM

Oviously it's the person in charge.

Officer Fogarty is the best Officer down there!

-- Posted by poetjoseph on Thu, May 8, 2008, at 7:50 AM

I agree with A CITIZEN, whatever happened to freedom of speech?

Just because one works with someone doesn't mean one has to like the people they work with. Who knows, the guy may have deserved it.

-- Posted by nurselady on Thu, May 8, 2008, at 7:40 AM

Maybe the supervisor deserved the comment. Just because a person works for someone doesn't mean he has to give up his freedom of speech. I've found that supervisors who take care of their employees and treat them well usually don't have discipline problems.

-- Posted by A Citizen on Thu, May 8, 2008, at 7:33 AM

seems like we have a police state down at the station,as a policeman , who can you turn to if you see or hear something bad that is going on ? best would be to clean house and start over and hire policeman that are fit and not over weight.

-- Posted by sid36us on Thu, May 8, 2008, at 6:47 AM

it seems all this is left over from Williamson's days. someone has to clean it up.
