Teacher suspended; accused of sex with student

Friday, May 9, 2008
A Lake County High School teacher was detained on Thursday after she was confronted with allegations of her sexual relations with a 17-year-old male student at the school.

Lake County Schools Superintendent Joey Hassell declined to name the teacher, but sources confirmed science teacher and cheerleading coach Tracey Hinson, an educator with the system since 1993, is the person.

Hassell said the teacher was called to the office at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday and informed of the reason she was being suspended without pay. Hassell said she was taken into custody and escorted from the school by law enforcement authorities, but had not been charged.

"We are investigating," said Hassell. "The matter is pending."

School Resource Officer Jimmy Snider was also involved with the matter.

Hinson is reported to have been involved with the student before the student was expelled for suspected drug use earlier in the semester. The student approached school authorities with images and text messages saved on his cell phone detailing the relationship. The teenager offered the evidence to school officials to be able to return to school, said several people who were privy to the matter.

The school system's Web site was disabled after the incident.

Most people on here are quick to execute Mrs. Hinson. (granted she does need to be fired..if it indeed happened)

What about the fact that the boys mother KNEW this was going on, after seeing text messages and reviewing his cellphone records. This is the same evidence that the mother tried to use to get Mr Hassell, to lift her precious son's suspension. If im not mistaken this is blackmail, reckless endangerment, and a few more crimes, im sure... so if Hinson goes to jail, so should Mommy!!

dear taylormade,i do live in the real world.i have a 15 year old daughter in high school.not in this school system but in a neighboring county.there is absolutely no difference in boys and girls in this matter.i'm not saying if there was something going on that it wasn't consentual but it was still WRONG.i would feel the same way if it was a girl...but you don't need to get on here and pop off at me because what i have said is nothing compared to most of these posts.you want to get on here and run your mouth but tell me how would you feel if your kid came home and told you that they had been having sex with this teacher?would you believe them?or because you just think the teacher craps gold brush it off?try to put yourself in a parents shoes and then see how u feel!!!!!

TNGAL & peoples advocate, before you slander someone, you need to have the proof, to back up your words. You are liable for what you are saying. The elected officials can get your name from the State Gazette, since all of your information is in their computer. No charges have been filed on the individual that you are slandering. You are still giving initials but, there aren't alot of teachers in LC with those initials. If I was that teacher, I would file charges on the two of you. Then, see how you like having people talk about you.

All I can say is if I had a teacher wanting to have sex with me. NO ONE WOULD KNOW. I would have A+'s too.

I can understand why Santa wouldnt come to see you after reading all your post. But this is the last one I am going to direct to you because I can see that you are ignorant to the situation we have here in Lake County. You live in Dyersburg and have no ties to the school here so you have no idea what we as parents are going thru or the students either. We are all upset and disallusioned over all of this and are trying to cope with it the best we can. The last thing we need is some opinionated jerk getting on here and telling us that nothing is wrong with what happened simply because the boy is almost an adult. The fact still remains she is a teacher and he was her student. How many others have been there? That is what we are trying to find out now.

-- Posted by tngranny on Sat, May 10, 2008, at 6:13 PM

Can you prove Santa doesnt exist. That he doesnt have flying reindeer and one with a red nose. Just because you cant prove it, doesnt mean it isnt so.

-- Posted by tngranny on Sat, May 10, 2008, at 5:49 PM

Looking at your statement makes no sense to me. You said if you knew it was going on and told the police, the first thing they are going to ask for is proof.

Here is the no sense part.

If you have NO PROOF then how would you know it was going on??

Just by rumor??

I heard Santa claus was coming in a sleigh this x-mas. He has deer that can actually fly and one with a glowing red nose. Is that true?? I heard adults saying it for years when I was young.

Sometimes people tell things that are untruthful and everyone else just keeps spreading it.

Any and all remarks that say the teacher had been having wrongful acts with these boys and has no proof is slander. When you mention a person's name or reference to a person, it is slander. It may just be a rumor but it's still slander. (I'm talking about all the remarks about in previous years people claiming the teacher was doiing this)

The way everyone is typing here, they have first hand knowledge of this in the past. So that makes them cowards for letting it continue (if it really was) and not saying a word to any authority. Instead everyone just told their friends.

The teacher did wrong but the young man is old enough he knew how to take advantage of the situation. He is old enough to know exactly what he was doing. Like I said before, how can this be a boy so helpless and victim of an adult, when in less than a year he is old enough for society to send him to war and to die for his country???

-- Posted by taylormade on Sat, May 10, 2008, at 4:40 PM

The one boy you speak of is the one that has the evidence to prove what he is saying. Have any of the other boys come forward since this started.

-- Posted by tngranny on Sat, May 10, 2008, at 3:23 PM

Ok, say if you knew for a fact that this had been going on for years and you contacted law enforcement the first thing they are going to ask you for is proof. Evidence they can use in court to prove that this happened. Unless you have the actual victims come forward and say yes it happened you have nothing. I am not saying all the rumors are slander, I am saying that no one had any proof before now. They may know for sure it is fact but without evidence you have nothing.

-- Posted by tngranny on Sat, May 10, 2008, at 3:20 PM

And tngranny, for the get real part about you said

" I am sure that if asked these boys would have said yes I have had sexual relations with my teacher if asked by law enforcement. come on get real...."

To be honest they asked one guy so far and he said yes. Go figure that 100% saying yes so far.

-- Posted by taylormade on Sat, May 10, 2008, at 3:12 PM

Hear say.. Hmmmm...... So then what's going on here is slander and is a crime in itself. It's slander to say that this teacher has been doing this for years. If no one has proof then they should keep their mouths shut. If they come out and say they know for sure then they fall into the group of what I mentioned earlier. A follower.

This is exactly why gossip, rumors, and lies get so out of control. Slander... To be honest all of these people here saying that this teacher has been doing this in the past has done nothing but given proof they have done the crime of slander and can easily be sued.

I bet if we dug into the closet of everyone doing slander, we would find some yummy stuff. I find that usually when people try so hard to slam someone else they do so because they're so guilty themselves

-- Posted by taylormade on Sat, May 10, 2008, at 3:10 PM

taylormade---if what everyone is saying is true, this has been going on for years. But you have to have proof. not just hearsay when you accuse someone of sexual misconduct. I am sure that if asked these boys would have said yes I have had sexual relations with my teacher if asked by law enforcement. come on get real....well now they have proof. just sorry it took so long to get it. and yes the boy in question is 17 years old almost legal age to be considered an adult. but the fact still remains he is a student and she is his teacher. yes he might have known better but so did she.

-- Posted by tngranny on Sat, May 10, 2008, at 2:59 PM

I keep seeing SO MANY people get on here and talk about how this has been going on and how they knew about it and how they were in it, around it, or involved in it. SO where the hell were all these people last year? The Year before? The year before that??? This is the first time it's in the papers and someone is arrested. Has everyone been scared to step up and protect your children?? SO many keep saying "Well it's about time." Looks like to me it was about time long ago if YOU ALL already knew about it but ignored it. So if your child was being done wrong and your neighbor knew about it, would you want them to tell you or keep silent like you all have for so long?

Don't say anything like "We have been trying to tell what's going on" Because you haven't. If you went to the PD station and said that, they would be all over it. If you went to the papers and said that, the media would eat it up and be all over the place. I don't remember the PD searching nor the media snooping around.

So to me, if you knew about it and didn't tell anyone or get it stopped then shame on you. That is awful and maybe if your child is sexually touched, another person will have the guts and get something done about it.

I see a lot of followers here and no real leaders.

Dear TNMAMA... There is a big difference between girls and boys when it comes to matters like this. You can say no it's not but whatever. Here in reality it is. So come back from Never Never land for a moment. The boy is not a boy. He is a man. He is almost 18 years old. He knows how to make right and wrong decisions. He knew drugs were wrong I bet. He shows he continues to make wrong decisions. So don't put the blame on one person. The guy is old enough to drive and make decisions at red lights I assume.

-- Posted by taylormade on Sat, May 10, 2008, at 1:51 PM

The male teachers at LC were not role models years ago. When I was in the sixth and seventh grade, we had alot going on. One would physically touch your behind. The other one would make sexual remarks. So, this behavior did not just start. High school is one thing, but elementary is horrible for this to happen. The educators are wrong for doing this, but lets face it, sexual encounters are out there.

-- Posted by TN Blues on Sat, May 10, 2008, at 11:56 AM

TNMAMA- Sorry you got that impression from me. I do know that this issue happens all over the world and not just in Lake County. The point I was trying to make is, this woman is scum, she gives Lake County a bad name and she is not the only one. Lake County is not a bad place. I have previously stated in other comments on other articles concerning Lake County as being a tight net friendly community.

Taylormade- I am also sorry for your degrading and unrespectful remark. Consider yourself having a teenage daughter, which I do, and her going to a high school. Now think about why your daughter is in high school. You think she is there to learn and prosper in her studies, make friends, prepare for prom, graduation, dances, and clubs, in other words to make her mark in her own little community and hopefully go to college. While you are thinking about all of this, you find that the very people you have trusted to care, guide, teach, and be your child's ROLE MODEL are the very people that are distorting her mind and are having a sexual relationship with her. To be a teacher, one must have morals, ethics, and standards. A teacher having sex with students, has none!!!!!!

Where were all these teachers when I was in school? I bet I would have gotten much better marks. School would have actually been worth waking up and going to. Isn't there a song that older women make better lovers?

-- Posted by taylormade on Sat, May 10, 2008, at 10:00 AM

the schools website is up and running dont know why they say it was disabled. I had heard something about this a few months ago but thought it was only rumor. Now knowing it is true it is really scary as I have a granddaughter attending Lake Co. High. It is also rumored that five other teachers are being investigated. I hope they clean house and get them all out of there. You raise your children and try to teach them right from wrong and here these women are teaching them that it is alright. Like some of you say they may never have to answer to a court for this but one day they will have to answer to a higher court other than Lake Co. Juvenile court or Lake Co. General Sessions court or Circuit court. Still cant understand why she is appearing in juvenile court.......

-- Posted by tngranny on Sat, May 10, 2008, at 2:07 AM

this is not just happening in lake county politicallyinterested.you all make it seeem like since it happened in lake county that its just a bad place.i agree that this woman did wrong and i agree that more heads should roll because it has been going on with different kids over the years.i think that since there were no formal complaints that they just figured it was best to keep it quiet.that was wrong and i hope they get rid of alot of people on that school board including mr.hassell

-- Posted by tnmama on Fri, May 9, 2008, at 10:14 PM

no this isnt her first rodeo...and yes, lots of people were aware of it. she isnt the only teacher either...GH! and people know about her too but have just looked past it. it all comes down to who you know, you go live next door to, who you go to church with and who you play golf with!!

oh, btw...i went to dyersburg high school...and i will tell ya'll that there were 2 male teachers and 1 female teacher that had inappropriate relationships with students. i had a friend, a few years older than me, on the basketball team and the coach was having sex with her! and that isnt hear-say, THAT IS A FACT!!!

-- Posted by TNGAL on Fri, May 9, 2008, at 8:06 PM

Like i said so sad !!!!!!!!!!!!!

-- Posted by mrman on Fri, May 9, 2008, at 5:13 PM

What about the "spice" girl, GH

-- Posted by peoples advocate on Fri, May 9, 2008, at 4:01 PM

What is the public not being told from the school officials and why? I was always under the impression that if a authority figure was accused of any inappropriate conduct and is not charged then they are suspended with pay so why is she suspended without pay?

-- Posted by baby boomer on Fri, May 9, 2008, at 3:00 PM

you can't tell me that other people in this school system didn't know this was going on.from what i hear this isn't the first time she has done this.i went to lake county schools and lived there until i was grown and i just find it hard to believe with it being such a small community that noone knew this was going on...i think that everyone believed that since there were no complaints being made to just leave it alone.but you can't down lakecounty because this is happening everywhere...

-- Posted by tnmama on Fri, May 9, 2008, at 2:32 PM

Oh...something else. The female teacher at the time taught Science also...what a coincidence.

-- Posted by Patriotsfan on Fri, May 9, 2008, at 2:18 PM

we had teachers doing stuff like that 25 years ago...just not as often. I can name a couple myself...1 male, 1 female. 1 at a Dyersburg school, the other Dyer County. Yeah, it happened...it was just kept hush-hush

-- Posted by Patriotsfan on Fri, May 9, 2008, at 2:17 PM

I don't think we had any teachers doing stuff like that thirty years ago when I graduated from Dyersburg High. I don't think we had any you would have even wished would have.
