Teacher headed to court on Wednesday

Tuesday, May 13, 2008
A teacher accused of having sexual relations with a student is scheduled to appear at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, in Lake County Juvenile Court.

The teacher, Tracy Hinson, 38, of Newbern, was charged last week with contributing to the unruly behavior of a minor. She is currently free on a $1,500 bond.

Hinson, a Lake County High School science teacher, was suspended without pay on Thursday, May 8, after being confronted with allegations that she'd been sexually involved with a teen-aged male student at the school.

A search warrant filed in the case on May 1 asked Verizon Wireless to produce a record of the cell phone calls between the teacher and the student from Dec. 1 to April 8. The warrant noted that LCHS Resource Officer Jimmy Dale Snyder had obtained a listing of the calls from the boy's mother.

Mr. Fulkerson,

You obviously don't know the people of Lake County and have no idea what you are saying. There are countless people in our community who are educated. I do not know why you think some how you are above the wonderful people of Lake County. I can not imagine living anywhere else. We are a community much like any other. We have young and old, rich and poor, good and bad. We do not speak ill of your community--where ever that might be. But I am sure that you have your share of problems there too. It just makes it more difficult when you know all of the families envolved. It makes it personal to all of us. We want our children to be safe and we want justice to be done. I am sure you won't have trouble understanding that!

Here'sMy2Cents:

The reason for that is, most people in Lake County can't read, or they just wouldn't fully understand it anyway.

Just so everyone knows, a lot of comments that are factual have been removed...what happened to Freedom of Speech?

A mistake is one thing but this is a crime!

You people, get a life, and stay out of other peoples business. Most of what people are saying is just rumors. It seems like there are alot of accusations without the proof. Be concerned with your own lives and look at your own faults. This is just jealousy on your part. The students will recover, and guess what? They will probably make mistakes, also. Life goes on!!!!!!

Yes, Ms. Hinson appeared in court today and the charges of contributing were dismissed. She was initially charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor in order to bring her in for questioning. I read many of your comments questioning the charge and with good reason, it was a legal smoke screen in order to arrest Ms. Hinson. Those charges are dismissed because there is not enough evidence in the area for the charges to stick. This is not surprising because they were never intended to stick, only to be used as a vehicle to bring Ms. Hinson. If you feel Ms. Hinson is innocent, don't get too excited by this. New charges will be filed. If you feel Ms. Hinson is guilty, don't be too disappointed. There are various forms of charges and sex crimes against children/teenagers. If charges are not chosen carefully, then they run the risk of not being able to prosecute and convict. They must know as much as possible about the nature of the relationship (including what sex acts were involved and where they happened) in order to charge Ms. Hinson with appropriate crime(s).

Everyone who is making comments on here...Please keep in mind that sex crimes are pretty much the only crimes that merely an accusation against you can ruin your life. For every true accusation by a student in America, there has also been a false one as well. Lynch mob justice will not work in this area. This is a very tricky area for the prosecution and the defense regardless of guilt-give them some time please.

lets see how long this stays up.

i think i can fill u in, sportsgirl. see, lake county schools are really good at covering things up. were it not for the media attention, this would have been settled quietly and brushed under the rug. just like the other teacher who was caught sending sexually explicit emails and pictures to a student, who was politely escorted off the property and then told not to come back. or the teacher's aid from last school year, who was caught stealing money, fired, and nothing was heard of it. this year they have the male teacher who was caught watching porn on a school computer by a student. he's still there. and the teacher who left the kid in the room during the tornado (thats been kept really quiet). and tracy, and the others that have been, and still may be named in all this. coverup after coverup. thats what they do best.

Boy, we had all of these comments and now nothing. I have heard a lot more is going on in Lake County Schools, can anyone comment?

-- Posted by sportsgirl on Wed, May 14, 2008, at 10:39 AM

has anybody heard anything about the covered up things? aside from what i've been putting up here, that is. the porn watching teacher is still there. why? if a student had been watchin some porn video or looking at dirty pics online, they would have expelled him/her so fast it would have made their head spin. and what about the teacher who left a student asleep in the classroom during the tornado in ridgley? that's a new one, isn't it? cover ups. its what the schools do best. we should be concentrating on the "educating students" part instead of the C.Y.A. part. I wonder if the schools and the dirty teachers can do what is right for a change.

The reality is that many people of this community are concerned not only about mrs henson but all school staff. There is no doubt that Lake County will survive. I am from here. We have seen tragedies of every kind before including tragedies similar to this one. The challenge is not survival but doing what is right. Guilty or not guilty...the people of Lake County need to demand the highest standards for our children...without all of us standing together with these demands, nothing with be done to prevent things like this happening in the future. We should not run our system like a backyard bbq but instead a billion dollar corporation insisting on the best educators to fill each position and the highest qualified administrators to ensure that our children are being educated and offered opportunities that will make the future a better place. The people of Lake County are tired of settling for second best and the excuses that come with it! Contact your elected school board officials and demand the best for your children. We elect these people. They work for us.

Stop insulting Lake County and anyone else except this teacher. Regardless of the boy's alledged reputation, SHE (hinson) is at fault and should be punished.

I FIND IT FUNNY YOU ARE ALL QUICK TO JUDGE MRS. TRACY BUT I WAS A STUDENT OF HERS AND HER CLASS WAS ONE OF THE BEST CLASS OFFERED BY LCHS. HER HANDS ON METHOD AND TEACHING ETHICS WERE GREAT AND NOT ONLY DID YOU LEARN THE INFORMATION YOU RETAINED IT!! NOW SHE NEVER HAD A RELATIONSHIP WITH A STUDENT THAT I KNOW OF AND I DOUBT SHE WOULD BUT YOU SEE IN TODAYS WORLD IT IS ABOUT GETTING TO THE TOP AND SOME PEOPLE WILL JUST DO ANYTHING TO GET TO THE TOP BY EVEN COSTING SOMEONE THEIR JOB AND ENTIRE LIFE. BUT I DO WANT MRS. TRACY TO KNOW THAT MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU AND MAY EVERYTHING RETURN TO NORMAL FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!

If it was just one person we could cope, however as days go by we are finding out that there are several teachers at the high school involved. The asst. principal has already resigned, who is to follow....

-- Posted by tngranny on Wed, May 14, 2008, at 12:10 AM

The teacher is supposed to be a person who sets a good example for the students. The kid or it's mother is really not the issue here. The teacher acted inapropriately with a child. She is supposed to know better.

-- Posted by Glenda on Wed, May 14, 2008, at 12:08 AM

My children attend Lara Kendall and the school has been rebuilt and remodeled. It looks good. My children are getting a good education and the teachers seem to care about the kids they teach. The problem is that Lake County is so small the attention gets out of hand. This is happening everywhere not just there. Do not be so quick to judge everyone when only one person messes up. That is not fair to the other residents of the county.

Any news from the school board meeting?

-- Posted by Here'sMy2cents on Tue, May 13, 2008, at 9:52 PM

also, just in case anyone was wondering...most of the observations and suggestions I make to administration, etc are totally ignored. They don't want to hear from someone who is from here either.

-- Posted by tractorsandchickens on Tue, May 13, 2008, at 7:52 PM

Amen! I'm glad someone else realizes the whole click thing going on. I knew it was not my imagination. I hate that new ideas and new teachers are being treated this way. I also agree that something needs to be done about it. I go to my children's class room on a regular basis and many times uninvited and unannounced. I just show up. I have had no problems. We have been blessed with a wonderful teacher this year who deserves the highest praises. I know everyone does not have that. But everyone can get better envolved with what is going on at school with their kids. Talk to school board members, show up at school often, make suggestions to administrators about things that can make our school a better place. Our children deserve the best! after all that has happened this week...I am praying that the right things are decided in this matter.

-- Posted by tractorsandchickens on Tue, May 13, 2008, at 7:50 PM

Lake County schools have gotten teachers who want to teach and are very dedicated. There are some amazing teachers that work their tails off. However, the few clicks that run the schools, including administration, like to run new people out. As an outsider, one is constantly reminded that they are not from LC and when he/she gives ideas on how to improve the school, all ideas are shot down with, "that's not how we do things in Lake County." When a highly qualified teacher comes into the area, excited to teach, and ready to work, they are treated like crap. They are called into the office and reprimanded for insignificant items, while other teachers are swearing at students, leaving their classroom unattended, and many other unacceptable things. Furthermore, the school likes to keep all but a select few parents in the dark so they can do whatever they want. Parents need to realize that this is their school system and they deserve better. Parents have a lot of rights that the school isn't giving them. This situation is awful; however, it is just a piece of the bigger problem happening in Lake County. While I agree that these situations are happening all over the country, these situations are not being covered up all over the country, as many things in Lake County are. "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten." This saying was made for the Lake County School system. If the people of Lake County really want a change, someone from outside the area (not Dyersburg or Obion) needs to be hired. Your last name should not matter, what is in the best interest of students should.

I hope someone from The State Gazzette will report on the school board meeting.....this sure won't get much coverage in The Lake County Banner!

-- Posted by Here'sMy2cents on Tue, May 13, 2008, at 6:19 PM

yeah, the high school building is crap. at least they made an effort to give it a facelift. it was built in the sixties and it was nice back then. you can't polish a turd though, and if you do its just a shiny turd. look at the lara kendall building, shiny in the front, and crap in the back. what the place needs is an enema. if the teachers have to be arrested, so be it. if they want to quit, so be it. they just need to go. they need to find some teachers who want to TEACH and EDUCATE instead of doing WHO and WHAT they want to do. they need to replace everyone, however remotely involved, from the top down. superintendant to janitor.

Let me just say to all of you-a wrong has been done. Our community is devistated. This situation is hurtful to all who are envolved. So many of you are quick to judge the people of Lake County. You all seem to have so many things to say about us. There are many wonderful people who live here. We should not be constantly trashed simply because we grew up here and CHOOSE to live here...a place where we have family and friends...a place where many fond memories of our own lives will forever remain...a place where we have hope for a promising future for our children...and yes, a place where tragedy can happen. And this matter is a tragedy. It is unfortunately happening across the United States. Look at our world and how it is changing. Look at what it has become in the last 20 years. We are all at fault for allowing things like this to continue if we do not all stand together saying "this is not acceptable!" We must be the first to make the change. It is very difficult to stand in front of group such as a school board---and stand alone---maybe not with a complaint as huge as this one---but a complaint just the same. It seems so much of the time that the administrators have their own adgenda. They really don't want your suggestions or comments. They only want to accomplish goals that benefit SELF. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? It's is not that the people of Lake County are terrible people. It just seems that sometimes noone is listening. I think that is what has happened in this tragic situation. Noone really wanted to hear that something so awful was/is going on for years. They were too busy working on their own plans to get ahead to be dragged down by a scandal. Teachers should be held to a higher standard. We are trusting them to guide our children for several hours a day. They should talk the talk and walk the walk. Their lifestyle should not be in question. They should be accountable for their actions. I am curious to see just exactly what will be done in this situation...or not done. It will send a message and set the tone for the future of Lake County Schools. Guilty or Not Guilty??? Would you really want someone who had a reputation like this teaching your children? I would not. Keep in mind while monitoring the ongoing scandal that all people in Lake County are not like these people who are tragically in this situation.

Why can't people use punctuation and the correct spelling? It makes it really hard to read and to understand exactly what you are trying to say.

-- Posted by Concerned_Finley_Man on Tue, May 13, 2008, at 3:56 PM

I heard that there has been at least one additional resignation today. Is that true?

-- Posted by SoDyersburg on Tue, May 13, 2008, at 2:42 PM

OK, once again to all those that knew me while I lived in Lake County, THIS IS WHY I WOULD NOT SEND MY CHILDREN TO THAT SCHOOL DISTRICT!

I may have been looked down as the mother whom thought that her children were to good to go to Lake County Schools, but when the schools look as old as they do and knowing the fact that the schools were slated as the worst in the state, next to Memphis schools, you to, my friend, would not allow your child to step foot into that setting. The high school looks as if someone built it back in the 40's and left it to rot on without thinking that this is the gateway to the future of the nation. When action news 5 did an areal of the school, how much more deplorable could the school look? I guess when you have a school system like the one in question; you will have a school building to go right along with it, in the gutter!
