Police targeting prostitution in city; several arrested

Friday, May 23, 2008
A little less than a month after promising a new drive against criminal activity in Dyersburg, several prostitution arrests have resulted.

Two were arrested Thursday night.

"That's what I meant when I said Dyersburg can no longer be your home if you take part in crime," said Police Chief Terry Ledbetter.

Ledbetter issued an ultimatum of sorts on May 7 when he commented on the new drive against public nuisances.

"If you are a drug dealer, gang member, prostitute or pimp, Dyersburg can no longer be your home," said Ledbetter. "If you don't move voluntarily, we will assist you in finding a new home."

A day later, an undercover police operation arrested Jennifer Bell, 28, and her alleged "pimp," Michael Lynn Thorpe after a sting at the Sunrise Inn, 1170 U.S. Hwy. 51 Bypass.

Bell had been arrested on a prostitution charge in October at the Economy Inn after police attention was called for an altercation over payment.

Two more women who are alleged to have offered services to undercover officers were arrested on Thursday night.

Chrissy Lee Simpson, 30, and Lisa Carol Sipes, 41, were arrested by police on charges of prostitution on the U.S. Highway 51 Bypass.

The Thursday arrests come almost a year to the day since the first prostitution arrests in Dyersburg in years. In May 2007, two women were arrested on Davis Road after a joint investigation by the police and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

"Prostitution may not be as criminal as some people think, but it's illegal. We have a zero-tolerance policy," said Lebetter. "That means no prostitution, drug dealing. Anything criminal, we are going after it."

I remember the building as being a two story squared shaped with brown asbestos siding with a brick design on it .......... the sign actually said "Lula's Dinette"....... that's the way I remember it ....... We always passed by it going to my grandmother's house at Bruceville...........

Here's how I knew Lulu's location. When school was out dad would let me go with him on the Dr Pepper truck and carry drinks into every place but one - Lulu's. At that stop he always said, "You stay in the truck." I suspected he said that on instructions from mom. Needless to say I was always disappointed because I wanted to see what "they" looked like. Once I saw a big old unattractive woman (at least 35 or 40) look out the door and that squelched my interest somewhat. Were those places legal back then or did the law look the other way with one eye on the parking lot to make sure teenage boys stayed in the truck?

Lulu's at 4-points? Sharecropper Street on South Main? Don't ask me how I know. ;-)

This is nothing new in Dyer County........... 50 years ago we had Lulu's............ 75 years ago we had Sharecropper Street........... I quote Ecclesiastes, Chapter 1, verse 9:

"The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun."

Good work men in blue. Now let's get started on that illegal immigrant problem: Go after our elected officials who are ignoring both the problem and the immigration laws while you're at it.

Big John Cribbs used to put people on the train to Chicago and tell them not to come back to Dyer County ,,,,,,,,,,,

-- Posted by treasons on Sat, May 24, 2008, at 10:46 PM

its about time they do some thing.. but its sad when in my community you cant leave a gas can or mower on my porch with out having to run some on off before it gets stolen. the law in this town need to patrol more and stop talking in parking lots as i have seen them do alot.
