Ripley plant closing

Tuesday, June 10, 2008
One of Lauderdale County's largest employers is closing, leaving more than 500 people without jobs.

The Siegel-Robert Automotive South plant, also called Tennessee Electroplating, is slated to begin layoffs in July. Ripley officials were notified of the pending closure last week, which will affect 524 employees.

The 434,000-square-foot plant on Viar Road is scheduled to be closed by the end of the year.

Tennessee Electroplating was established in Ripley in 1964.

The mass layoff and pending closure comes a month after materials giant Guardian Automotive, of Auburn Hills, Mich., purchased Siegel-Robert of Fenton, Mo. Terms of the purchase agreement were not disclosed.

A spokesman for Siegel-Robert in St. Louis did not return messages seeking comment on the matter.

Also in the Guardian deal was the Ripley North Siegel-Robert plant, which has 625 workers, and the Newbern plant in Dyer County, with 200 employees.

The woeful news comes as Lauderdale County in April, the latest month available, posted the state's second-highest unemployment rate, at 9.2 percent.

whatdoIknow............ please perservere.......... finding and holding a good job has never been easy..... anytime, anywhere......... there are over 6,000 employees working in manufacturing jobs in Dyer County........ and those jobs have a multiplying affect on the overall local economy..... a lot depends on your education, training, work record, and experience............ hang in there......... never give up........ things are better jobwise in Dyer County than many surrounding counties...... things are tough all over right now........... $4.00 a gallon gasoline is putting a damper on lots of things.............

Muscadine.......please tell me where these jobs are, because I have been looking for months and unless you can work 12 hour shifts overnight, no one will call you.

I'm not trying to argue or be funny. I really want to know because my $6.00 an hour job isn't paying the babysitter each week much less the bills and (for those of you quick to assume) NO I'm not getting any government assistance. Tell me where to go and who to talk with because I've been all over town!!

I do hope that the employees find alternative employment and my prayers are with them. I guess any job is better than no job, so I am thankful, but still looking for other options.

It's nice to hear that the city of Dyersburg and Dyer County are going to build another "spec" building just northeast of the NSK plant on the same side of the highway.......... the leaders of the community worked hard to get NSK here and I'm confident that they will do everything possible to get someone into the new "spec" building after it is built....... All of us have to make a living, first and foremost......... everything else is secondary.......... the leaders of Dyersburg, Dyer County, and Newbern are doing a good job of giving their citizens an opportunity to make a living..........

My condolences to all employees affected by this closure. This situation is terrible and unexcuseable. Of course big companies like Guardian Automotive only think about their profit line and not what their actions do to their employees. I encourage all employees to gather all their muster, passion, abilities, and gusto to overcome this job loss and make themselves a much better person.

First of all, start working on your resume. If you need assistance, go to your local library. Brush up on your skills. Do you need to take any "refresher" courses? Perhaps you can also check your local library for universities that offer trade classes.

Go on line and check the job markets in West Tennessee. Most all newspaper classifieds can be found on line. Tell everyone you are looking for employment and ask them to relay any info they may have on available jobs. Perhaps your local supermarkets/stores may have bulletin boards where you can post a notice.

You may have to go outside your comfort zone to take a job. But anyone can tolerate any type employment as long as it is legal, safe, and secure. Look at it as a learning experience. Many employers are willing to hire an individual with no experience/skills in their available company IF the individual is willing to learn new skills.

Last of all, keep your faith and your confidence will grow. Good luck. Let us hear from you on your progress.

HOPEFULLY NEWBERN IS NOT NEXT..MAN, I HATE IT FOR THE PEOPLE IN RIPLEY..IT'S DIRTY WHEN THEY LET YOU WORK UP TIL THEY DON'T NEED YOUR SERVICES ANY LONGER...THEY KNEW THEY WOULD BE CLOSING...THEY COULD HAVE GIVEN THE PEOPLE A FAIR WARNING WHERE THEY COULD BE SEARCHING FOR EMPLOYMENT...A 2 WEEKS NOTICE ABOUT YOUR JOB IS LOWDOWN...
