Charges bound over to grand jury

Tuesday, June 17, 2008
Two men reportedly involved in a hit-and-run attack on a Dyersburg police officer earlier this month face possible indictments.

DeAngelo Duran Liggons and Justin Clay Mancell waived their rights to preliminary hearings in Dyersburg city court on Monday, June 9.

Liggons, 25, whose address is listed both as 303 N. Connell and 603 Pillow Ave., is charged with attempted second-degree murder, failure to give information and render aid, and second-offense driving with a suspended license. In exchange for waiving his hearing, Liggons' bond was reduced from $100,000 to $50,000.

Mancell, 25, 271 Dr. Hall Road, is charged with being an accessory after the fact and filing a false report. In exchange for waiving his hearing, Mancell's bond was reduced from $10,000 to $5,000.

Charges against both men have been forwarded to the next Dyer County grand jury for possible indictments.

According to arrest warrants, Liggons left the All-In-One store on Lake Road with something concealed under his shirt on June 2. A store clerk alerted Dyersburg Police Officer Eric Larson, who happened to be at the store. Larson attempted to stop Liggons, but Liggons jumped into a truck and began backing up. The truck dragged Larson and rammed him into a concrete barrier next to the gas pumps. Liggons then drove off.

Mancell, who owns the truck and was allegedly a passenger in the vehicle during the assault, reported that his truck had been stolen. He reportedly admitted that he filed the false police reported to keep from being held accountable for the crime.

In other city court business on Monday, Latonia L. Eisom waived her right to a preliminary hearing on theft of property in excess of $10,000, identity theft, forgery and a bench warrant for failure to appear.

Eisom, 30, 203 Jacob St. in Halls, is accused of writing worthless checks to purchase two vehicles from No. 1 Used Cars, 1345 S. Main St., on May 1. She purchased a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix for $10,788 and a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis for $5,973.

Eisom also is accused of assuming the persona of Venus Taylor and purchasing a 2001 Chevy Impala for $6,000 at AC Auto Sales, 834 S. Main St., on Aug. 10, 2006. She reportedly paid for the car with a stolen check. She also is accused of failing to appear in court on the identity theft and forgery charges on Oct. 2, 2006.
