Man gets six years for theft from firm

Thursday, June 19, 2008
A 29-year-old man was sentenced to six years in prison after he admitted to stealing $13,000 cash and a .25-caliber handgun from a local business.

Ricky L. Reed, 29, 213 Newbern-RoEllen Road, pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of property in excess of $10,000 on Tuesday, May 27, in Dyer County Circuit Court. A related burglary charge was dismissed.

Reed was accused of taking the money and handgun from Ford Construction Co. on July 4.

Although he qualifies as a "career offender," Reed was sentenced as a multiple Range 2 offender, a classification that makes him eligible for parole after serving 35 percent of his sentence. The sentence is to be served concurrently with a recently imposed six-year sentence for selling cocaine.

Reed also was ordered to pay $14,000 restitution to Ford Construction Co.

In other circuit court action that day:

* Teresa A. Spence, 39, 111 Calcutt, pleaded guilty to one count of forgery. A second count of forgery was dismissed. She was accused of forging checks on the bank account of her daughter, Latrace S. Brandon, in October.

Spence's two-year sentence was suspended to the time she'd already served in jail. The sentence is to be served consecutively to a probation violation on two previous charges. She was sentenced to an additional six months in jail and another year of supervised probation for the probation violation.

Spence was ordered to pay $330.75 restitution to Brandon's bank account at the Dyersburg Credit Union.

* Angela M. Powell, 42, address unavailable, entered a best interest plea to a charge of selling less than half a gram of cocaine. Her three-year sentence was suspended to 60 days in jail, followed by three years of probation. Her $2,000 fine also was suspended.

Well, well, well. (Sighs) Boy it seems that EVERY case that comes through the court system here involves a plea deal for a significantly less penalty. I know that plea deals keeps the court system moving by avoiding lengthy trials, etc. but some of these clowns need to get what they've earned. Mr. Reed is a "career offender" but he gets a lesser range of punishment? At this point in his chosen profession of being a piece of trash, he should get the book thrown at him. Am I the only one that's disappointed?

I tell you what Ricky Reed is a sure piece of trash. He has always been a trouble maker and he always gets a slap on the hand. The courts should be sick of seeing him by now. You would think that they would do something with him...
