Friday, June 20, 2008
The historic Newbern Depot will be the setting for a theater classic this weekend, with opening night for "The Glass Menagerie" set tonight at 7.

The production of Tennessee Williams' most successful play will take place Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21, and June 27 and 28. Curtain is at 7 p.m.

Tickets are available for $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens, with proceeds benefiting the Newbern Historical Preservation Society. Group discounts are also available.

The classic play is a departure from past productions at the Depot and the cast and crew of the production are excited to revisit the timeless piece in the traditional setting of the Depot.

"After a long string of comedies, it is nice to show a classic," said Silhouette Theatre Company director Don Mercer. "This play really stretches the actors. The show itself is a challenge to any theater group and it's nice to make a fuss over something different."

"I love this play because the cast has had great chemistry from the beginning," said Caitlin Fogarty, who portrays Laura Wingfield. "We get along. I think this play appeals to a lot of families because it covers issues like fighting and drinking and things that really happen."

"It's the great American dysfunctional family," said Mercer.

"My favorite part of the play is where Amanda and Tom are having an argument in the living room and Laura is in the background crying," said Jesse Cowart, who plays Amanda in the play. "It's a tense scene and it really puts in light what the play is about."

"The end monologue makes the show," said Mercer. "It is a great American classic that needed to be revived in this area."

"I think it's a great play and production because it has really great actors and actresses," said Brian Rector who plays Jim O'Conner, the gentleman caller. "It is the talent of Dyer County."

Dustin Campbell plays Tom, the autobiographical role of Tennessee Williams.

"I relate to his character," said Campbell. "There is good chemistry with the cast. Come and check us out and tell me what you think about the play!"
