Extortion, coercion of witness alleged

Friday, June 20, 2008
A Dyersburg man who attempted to affect the outcome of a criminal case has been charged with extortion and coercion of a witness.

Robert J. Mathis, 47, 2162 Meadowview Drive, was arrested Tuesday, June 17, in the district public defender's office.

Mathis is the father of Jonathan Larrience Mathis, 220 Lake St. in Ridgely, who was indicted a year ago on a charge of raping a child. Jonathan Mathis had been scheduled for trial July 16 in Dyer County Circuit Court, but the date is likely to change.

According to warrants filed with the Dyersburg city court clerk's office, Robert Mathis is accused of making the alleged rape victim recant her statement against Jonathan Mathis. Robert Mathis expected to receive $2,000 from his ex-wife, Loretta Johnson, in exchange for the victim's recantation.

Robert Mathis is being held in the Dyer County Jail. A bond hearing is scheduled Friday, June 20, in Dyersburg city court.

Having had my dealings with the idiot bob 9 years ago, he is getting what he deserves. he should have went to prison then, but they got him now.

As far as I've heard this man causes nothing but trouble anyway. I'm not surprised.

"public defenders office what a joke" Why do you have a problem with what the public defenders office is doing? Because you don't work and pay taxes so you have a problem with them doing their job. What we as taxpayers ask them to do is expose the guilty and defend those who are innocent.

Definitely good police work ! I say thank you to the men who did their jobs and put someone who is a criminal , behind bars . Justice prevails !!!!

to all who read this particular story .. the facts in the paper are accurate , after all ... I was there . Good police work is an understatement . I am quite pleased with the manner in which this was handled , and have great respect for those in law enforcement who assisted in exposing this man for what he really is ... ( that being a man with not only a criminal history , but a criminal mind ).. as well as someone who will stoop to all time lows to get what he wants , even if it means using his own children to get it .
