Animal cruelty charge among those sent to grand jury

Monday, June 23, 2008
A Trimble man faces a possible indictment for cruelty to animals.

Dyer County General Sessions Judge Tony Childress found enough probable cause to believe that Michael Robertson, 44, 35 Gin St. in Trimble, demonstrated cruelty this his pet, a bulldog mix.

Robertson's dog reportedly was undernourished and severely infected with hookworms, roundworms and heartworms. The dog died April 15, eight days after being taken into custody by the Dyersburg/Dyer County Humane Society. An arrest warrant said the dog was found April 7 with its leash tangled around a tree. The dog's backbone and ribs were visible through its skin, the dog's gums were white and the dog's food bowl was empty.

Veterinarian reports described the dog as being emaciated due to lack of proper nutrition; having red, irritated skin; being infected with a variety of worms; and having increased fluid sounds in his lungs, an elevated heart rate, a slightly elevated blood sugar rate and an elevated white blood cell count. The dog also was severely anemic.

In other recent general sessions court action:

* Tyler Armstrong, 17, 339 Salenfriend, waived his right to a preliminary hearing on a charge of felony evading arrest. He is accused of jumping out of a car and fleeing during a traffic stop on June 4.

* Timothy Wayne Capps, 43, 816 Simpson Road, waived his right to preliminary hearings on charges of driving with a revoked license and violation of a habitual motor vehicle offender act. He was cited on the charges March 16 after being involved in a wreck on Old Fowlkes Road.

* A phone harassment charge against James Lee Glissen, 22, 1514 Wheeler St., was bound over to the grand jury. He is accused of repeatedly calling and sometimes threatening a Dyersburg woman and her family members, according to an arrest warrant filed in December.

* Lana Smith, 38, 1300 Ewell St., waived her right to a preliminary hearing on a forgery charge. She is accused of illegally cashing 44 checks on an account belonging to Mike Bevis. The checks amounted to $2,025.

come on ppl!!!! the civil war was fought many years ago! the north and south are not that different anymore. half my family is from and still in the north and the other half is from and still here in west tennessee. i go back and forth between all the time. the only difference is that some areas are more populated than others and have more resources to handle more issues. please give up the north south thing, your not that different just accents vary a little!

Oh Im not complaining about all of the south , I love the quietness of it . The reason Im moving is because I have an *bleep* father and he likes to make my life a living nightmare . Im not going back to the north by any means , there is crime there , and I have a child . I want to raise him in a quiet little town like I live in , and thats why Im still here . But again , Im moving ... Probably KY or somewhere close .. I never claimed that all of the south was bad .. Your right , everywhere is bad , or some parts of everywhere .

DYERSBURG IS WHERE I AM FROM....I MOVED BECAUSE I MAKE A LARGER INCOME THAN DYERSBURG COULD PROVIDE ME....THE BOTTOM LINE IS...IF SOMEONE IS UNHAPPY THERE OR IN THE SOUTH....SIMPLY LEAVE INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW BAD IT IS....I HATE TO SEE THE CRIME THERE..BUT ITS EVERYWHERE....IT'S NOT THE POSITIVE PEOPLE THAT MAKE DYERSBURG A BAD PLACE TO LIVE........

well all i said was that were i was from , things like this dont happen as much .. that is unless its a pit bull .. thats the main breed you hear about anywhere .. down here , almost everywhere i look , i see mistreated animals .. where i live at , i see pit bull fighters everywhere , i see pits in cages all over , i see dogs walking around skinny and with mange , i see dogs who are flea infested , i see homeless animals . now where i am from , you dont see it often . im from the suburbs where people take care of their pets , even pit bulls . i know there are mistreated animals everywhere you look , but like i said , where i come from , people take better care , and are more careful to make sure their pet , ie a pit bull or rotty , is well socialized so that they dont end up with a bad situation . thats all im saying .

JU5T1C34@LL, are you serious?

"The only animals that are mistreated in the North , from where I am from , which is certainly not New Jersey ( ghetto ville ) , is the pit bull unfortunately !"

The only animal that ever has been mistreated anywhere in the entire 'North' is the pit bull is about the most ridiculous statement I have read on this forum. That is pretty bad. I'm really not sure how this turned into a north/south issue. There are cruel people everywhere.

muscadine,

I didn't say that I was MORE concerned with the treatment of animals than the treatment of human beings, but if you would read this article, it deals with the mistreatment of an animal. I think that there are FAR more people who don't give a rat's butt about animals and that's why our animal shelters stay full and why instances such as this case happen. Furthermore, if you want to take this discussion into other realms with your comment about Adolf Hitler crying when his bird died, why don't we talk about how all of the worst serial killers got their start, by mistreating animals. Jeffrey Dahmer started by torturing dogs and cats before he started on humans. If these creeps will mistreat a helpless animal, then there's no telling what they are capable of.

Believe me , it wasnt by choice .. Id rather live in the North then the South . Now , about how northern jails treat people , and how southern jails treat people I wouldnt know . I dont get into trouble . You obviously know from experience . I wasnt comparing the two for treating people , I was comparing about animals . The only animals that are mistreated in the North , from where I am from , which is certainly not New Jersey ( ghetto ville ) , is the pit bull unfortunately ! I agree with the last post about spaying and neutering . There will be a few that slip through the cracks , but at least for the most part , it may help the problem with breeding and having animals in the humane society being put down . I also think that like in Michigan , people should have permits to own such animals as a pit bull , or mastiff , rotty , etc ... Maybe then that will help cut back on it too .. But who knows . Back to the jail topic , my brother is in the dcj and well . He was treated better , ate better , and didnt have to worry about crooked cops / corrections officers , in an illinois prison . So .. go figure

Adoph Hitler, who was responsible for more human deaths, directly and indirectly, than any other person in human history,,,,,,,,,,,,, cried like a baby when his pet canary died.......................

If Dyersburg is so bad..... and inferior to "up north"....... why do you yankees keep moving down here...........................

-- Posted by treasons on Tue, Jun 24, 2008, at 12:54 PM

What we need is a federal law that all pets be neutered and spayed. Only certified licensed breeders should be allowed to let their animal procreate.

The Dyer County Humane Society euthanized OVER 3 TONS of animals last year. Why aren't you people listening? Breeders are making up breeds that are ridiculous and calling them cute names like pekepoodle and sharbeagle and the such. These are not AKC recognized breeds and are just regular dogs that cost $300-$600. I have three rescued dogs from the HS.

I am ashamed of what people have done to the wolf.

IGNORANCE Whats with North and South, freaking ridiculous I quit reading these posts cause I couldn't stand the stupidity any more. I see it hasn't changed any. CRITICAL THINKING people and investigate, I can't believe there are so many stupid people in Dyersburg, but then again this is Dyersburg!!!

I wish to stay nuetral in this debate, as all of the details are not public yet. But, with that said, I think the human race treats it's convicts better then the ophaned, the widows, and the homeless. As for northerns treating animals better then southerns is an exercise in ingnorance. When you say animals, is that all inclusive, or just domesticated house pets. Besides, I'm an animal, a mammal in fact, and from personal experience, I have been better treated at Memphis City Jail then on the New Jersey Turnpike or the Pensylvania Thruway or the Tri-State Tollway.

But it is all relative. To me animals locked in a house or apartment all day while someone works is cruel. Anytime you take away free choice, it is cruel, animal or not.

Besides, do you know the difference between a yankee and a damn yankee?

A yankee goes home after the visit.

actually i hear more about the mistreatment of humans more then animals . then again , i am from the north , and up there people dont tolerate animal abuse .. down here on the other hand , and im not saying everyone or everywhere , but people dont care for their animals as much as up in the north . this is the first time ive seen on the news down here something about animal cruelty . i see everyday .. animals walking around skinny as rails .. and the cops dont do anything about it ... all abuse is bad period .. none should get more attention then the other .. i think if you kill an animal , or mistreat it , it should be just as bad as doing it to a human

It is said you can judge a man's character by the way he treats his dog. I hope he gets more than a slap on the wrist. Judge, a message needs to be sent!

Goodness JU5T1C34!! Muscadine said nothing

indicating a hatred for animals...he/she just

indicated that some folks are more concerned

about animals than humans.. Child abuse

sometimes doesn't get the attention that

animal abuse does..I have to agree. Both are

bad ... I believe than anyone who abuses animals

is more likely to abuse humans.

well animals are living breathing creatures , and if you dont like it , then move somewhere where there are no pets!!!!!! one of these days someone will do something to you and all im going to say is people shouldnt worry so much about humans and should pay more attention to animals .. your such a joke ... i can already see that you probably treat your animals , or have treated them , like crap from the way you talk about this case !! tisk tisk

-- Posted by JU5T1C34@LL on Mon, Jun 23, 2008, at 7:37 PM

Some people are more concerned about the treatment of animala than they are about the treatment of human beings.................

-- Posted by treasons on Mon, Jun 23, 2008, at 6:10 PM

I hope that the Grand Jury will send a message to the community that we will NOT tolerate this kind of treatment to animals. This is absolutely ridiculous. If you don't want the animal, surrender it to someone or some organization that can find it a better home. No animal deserves to be starved to death!! He should get the maximum punishment for this atrocious act.
