Newbern investigators arrested a man on Tuesday who police said confessed to stealing a World War II-era rifle and bayonet from a neighbor's house.

Jason Berry, 35, was taken into custody without incident from his Granite Drive residence after investigators assembled several clues that led to him being considered a suspect.

According to the report, a Brinks home security alarm was tripped at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, alerting police to the scene.

Investigators Greg Barr and Rocky Foster found entry was made through the garage door entrance without damage to the structure, footprints that matched the shoes Berry was wearing, and connecting him to where the stolen item was sold.

Barr said Berry, who had been hired to mow his neighbor's lawn while they were gone, had access to the house after the homeowner left a garage-door remote control with him to get the lawn mower.

The rifle was the only item taken from the house, said Barr.

After allegedly stealing the rifle, Berry sold it to Dixie Gun Works in Union City for $150, said the report.

Berry is lodged in the Dyer County Jail without bond for aggravated burglary and theft of property charges.

Berry in May was hospitalized from a gunshot wound he suffered while walking on Highway 77. Berry told police a drive-by shooter had fired rounds at him.

A day later, Berry confessed to shooting himself in the front left hip with a .380-caliber pistol.

He was sent to a psychiatric evaluation over the matter.

Barr said Berry asked police for mental help when he was arrested.

I dont understand all the comments on the officers. If they make a mistake they are ridiculed if they do something right they are ridiculed. Newbern police officers are not bad guys. They do their job but not every crime is solved in every town, city, state. What would they have to do to get a little praise. As for the picture, I am sure the pictures some of you pose for are easy to laugh at. Not all moments are photogenic. I think the picture shows 2 proud cops who have done their job and are proud.

Its off the streets regardless if they recovered it from dixie or not. Good job with the name calling. Real mature.

SoDyersburg, did you get a speeding ticket in Newbern?

Grow Up People. Atleast they got a weapon off the streets. If they didnt and someone was hurt with it, you would be on here griping about how they never do their jobs.

Thank you State Gazette for giving us pretty and cute Dyer County intellects the opportunity to ridicule law enforcement. Fortunately they are mature and professional enough to laugh off our juvenile comments and do their job.
