Fireworks spark fires, stir police

Continuing a bad Dyersburg tradition, youths in the city and county have caused several brush fires and shot fireworks at unsuspecting motorists in the days leading up to, and after, the Fourth of July holiday.

Several juveniles were questioned, and one taken into custody, around midnight on Friday after a bottle rocket had exploded beneath a Dyersburg Police car as it was parked at the corner of Hornbrook Street and St. George Avenue about midnight Friday.

The vehicle was not damaged and no one was injured in the incident.

Residents in the Future City and Bruce neighborhoods, worried about the fireworks catching their homes on fire, walked their yards armed with water hoses.

The sale and use of fireworks is illegal within the city limits.

Volunteer fire departments in the county responded to several reports of fields on fire over the last several days, most of which were attributed to fireworks that exploded in the dry matter.

No property damage other than the burnt fields was reported.

The city fireworks battles have become more malicious since rival groups started the annual "firecracker war" years ago, including a 2006 stabbing that injured a teenager.

Get rid of the fireworks period. Allow only firework shows. Whatever happened to respect of people and property? I enjoyed fireworks as a kid but my parents made sure I did not do something stupid. The older I get I see more and more people using the 4th as a way to cause trouble. It is sad, but given the times, not shocking. Come on parents live the way you want to be treated and teach your kids some respect. In some cases it is the adults causing the problems. Just my two cents

no lets not let a few bad apples ruin the rest of the crop. this is the same asdrinking, shot fireworks responsibly teach the youngons how to work them properly.some older people need to learn how to .it sure was a awesome firework show

at the highschool .we loved it

They should outlaw fireworks except in a controlled setting. Buying and shooting fireworks a week before and a week after the 4th of July is ridiculous! There are laws in place but not enforced. With the dry conditions that we are having its a wonder there are not more fires. Plus disturbing the peace is disturbing the peace, so why not stop it!

Very seldom do you ever read about responsible people breaking the law. I agree it is only a few that cause the problems, however, the damage the few cause is worth looking into other options. The volunteer firefighters have families too and I would be willing to bet they had rather be spending time with them. I have the luxury of reading about this and writing my comments, however, I am not the one walking around my house worring that some kid out after midnight will burn my house down around me due to the negligent use of fireworks and then say "oh I didn't mean too". Far too many times we forget that these "few" effect the "many". Besides the firework shows are far better than I could afford, and no mess to clean up.

i read that elvis used to have fireworks wars at graceland

LOL at Jeramy......I love how every topic on here turns into a race issue. Some of you should get a life, or maybe even donate some of your time and money to the children of "those neighborhoods" and then maybe they wouldn't be such "troublemakers". Either way, until you can come up with a solution; we are all a part of the problem and if all you can do is talk about "it" then what good does that do? You can never related to someone elses situation until you are put in it yourself, so don't be so quick to judge the parent(s). Oh, and by the way, my white neighborhood had troubles with fireworks and white kids out way past midnight as well, but why would the paper want to publish that? That's just my opinion, but what do I know........

Did anyone in your neighborhood call the cops? That may be why you got no publicity. There were fireworks in my black and white community till after midnight. We didn't call the cops either but I stayed up late, concerned. My neighbor, a wheelchair user, told me that he hesitated going to bed while the firecrackers were going off because it takes him several minutes to get up and get into his chair. He showed me remnants of a bottle rocket on his wood wheelchair ramp and said, "That's what I was afraid of." I've heard of no fires or injuries this year. Next year we might not be as lucky.

The fireworks issue is NOT a issue of race. It happens in all communities. Anyone who thinks it is a "black" thing is just as ignorant as the people who believe that there is a superior race. Plainly stated..as adults, who decide to reproduce, it becomes YOUR responsibility to raise those children to certian moral and legal standards. NOT breaking the law, respecting other human beings,of ALL races, and being a productive member of society should be minumum goals anyone sets for their children reguardless of race. As for a solution, Firework shows ONLY. That is the easiest way to control it.

we'll never know what happened at the farms because for obvious reasons that area probably wasn't patrolled as much as the future city and bruce neighborhoods, however im sure most police would look the other way if they happened to come across some doctor's kids doing this sort of thing. as for lakewood... its not even in the city limits so fireworks are legal there and they also have monster yards so the neighbors probably don't worry too much about their houses being burned down by bottle rockets

hey, dont the cops have crackheads and drug dealers to chase after and not kids with fireworks?

the cops do have better things to do, but you all need to remember that the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

The idea of a complete ban on fireworks in impossible to enforce....

1) a complete ban on them would result in poliece patrolling looking for drugs, illegal activity, guns, life threatening situations, misdemeanors, federal laws being broken, and FIREWORKS(?) on top of all that.

*one of the above does not fit, guess which one.*

2) the kids are breaking curfew already; either i doubt the parents care...or are informed of the laws. (your pick)

And to top it all off; it is such a communist statement.

I would be scared to shoot fireworks in the Bruce and Forrest St. areas. I mean...you can get shot down there for looking at someone the wrong way. If you set off a smoke bomb and some blue smoke clouds up Nuck Nucks new set of "22's" you're as good as dead! They should just get some Snap & Pops....I used to love those things!!!!!

Get real. Look at this www.kidsource.com/cpsc2/fireworks.html

"IV. STATES THAT BAN ALL CONSUMER FIREWORKS (including those which are allowed by CPSC regulations) - (total of 10 states):

Arizona

Connecticut

Delaware

Georgia

Massachusetts

Minnesota

New Jersey

New York

Rhode Island

Vermont"

This is of course from May 1 1999. I guess all of these states are communist. Where in the world do you live. The police do have more improtant things to do, but they did have to respond to these calls as well. The injuries alone that are caused by the improper use of fireworks would warrant better control. But I am sure you can think of a name to call me now.

I had fireworks in my area also until late and even a few days before. It concerned me but I did not call the police even though I considered it. I do not care for fireworks and know they can be dangerous. My brother-in-law set his own yard on fire about 25 years ago with a bottle rocket that he lit and shot off without a bottle. My mom hated fireworks because one of her brothers had one go off in his hand about 60 years ago. We only got to do sparklers and even they can be dangerous and set fires when conditions are dry.

i'd rather get by a bottle rocket then to get hit by a bullet.. Make a choice and choose wisely..If u take away fireworks they'll just bring their guns out ;)

I WAS VISITING MY MOTHER OVER THE WEEKEND IN THE FUTURE CITY COMMUNITY AND YOU CANNOT DRIVE DOWN THE STREETS BECAUSE KIDS ARE EVERYWHERE LIKE MARDI GRAS WITH FIREWORKS...THE WEATHER WAS NICE BUT I HAD TO KEEP MY WINDOWS UP BECAUSE I DID NOT WANT A BOTTLE ROCKET FLYING INSIDE...AS I GAVE MY WIFE A TOUR OF THE CITY, KIDS WERE SHOOTING FIREWORKS IN OTHER NEIGHBORHOODS, BUT THEY WERE NOT FIRING AT CARS OR RUNNING THROUGH PEOPLES YARDS...WHEN THE POLICE POSTED UP AT HORNBROOK/ST. JOSEPH...IT DID CALM THE SITUATION A LITTLE BIT...

Timay76, You are funny and i do like reading your post but its not that bad, that you can look at someone wrong and get shot . I think thats wild but they arent that bad its bad dont get me wrong but not that bad. Bruce community is one of the good parts about that side thats the only part where all races can go to Bruce and be civil and have fun lifting wieghts, playing basketball, soft ball, and other sports.Lets not scare people into not wanting to go to Bruce and enjoy them selves with there friends of other color.

They are still shooting fireworks in my neighborhood as of last night and when I looked out it was all adults. I admit kids should have more supervision while handling fireworks, but kids will be kids no matter what the location or race. We used to have bottlerocket wars when I was a kid and I lived way out in the country. Parents can't watch their kids 24-7 and don't always know what they are up to. Yes, firework safety is an issue, but the location and race is not. It isn't right to classify all people of one race or community based on what a few may do. It's not fair to the good people or the neighborhood they happen to live in.
