Donkey is roped at school after run through county

Wednesday, August 13, 2008
Two tranquilizer darts weren't enough to slow a donkey dashing through the heart of Dyersburg on Monday morning.

The donkey's run came to an end when it was trapped between two buildings at Dyersburg Intermediate School. Animal control officers roped the donkey and coaxed it into a trailer.

It was the third donkey-on-the-run in Dyersburg in less than two months.

Animal Control Officer Barry McCord said he doesn't know anything about the origin of the donkeys or why so many have come to town this summer.

A man from the Four Points area adopted the first two donkeys. Monday's donkey, a female, was taken to a pasture, where it will remain until the owner claims it.

Dyer County Sheriff Department reports indicated the donkey was seen at 8:26 p.m. Sunday at the Interstate 155 Welcome Center, at 10:54 p.m. Sunday on Burgies Chapel Road and at 7:45 a.m. Monday on Doyle Street.

Dr. Randy Prince and his wife, Sandy, spotted the young donkey Monday morning in their Lattawoods yard.

McCord said he was alerted to the donkey's presence on Wade Hampton Road about 5 a.m. Monday. He was joined an hour later by fellow Animal Control Officer Tim Hatch. The men and Dyersburg police officers chased the donkey through the Pill Hill area, down toward the Dyersburg Housing Authority apartments and east to the Ingram baseball field on Lake Road. From there, the donkey led the parade to Troy Avenue.

McCord said he shot one tranquilizer dart into the donkey at Troy. He thought he had the donkey cornered in someone's yard, but the donkey jumped over a fence and disappeared into the wooded gulley between Troy and Elm avenues. Hatch followed the donkey through the woods, walking her out onto Elm Avenue, where she received the second tranquilizer dart.

Unfazed by the double dose of tranquilizers, the donkey proceeded to Curry's Funeral Home and then the intermediate school. The chase lasted nearly five hours.

"She gave us a run for our money, but we caught her," McCord said. Donkeys are "just like a horse." Although they don't run quite as fast as a horse, donkeys "can get up and go," he said.

In a separate animal-on-the-loose report, the Dyer County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday night received several calls from motorists who had averted crashing into a group of horses galloping on Highway 78 near Palmer Subdivision.

When deputies arrived, the horses had traipsed toward the dead-end of Primrose Lane and into a field, where they were last spotted munching on the ground cover.

The owner of the horses was unknown at the time.

I love the quote "Donkeys...they're are like horses, not as fast...but they can get up and go!" That is priceless! It's like saying I dated a girl that looked like Pam Anderson...only she was Puerto Rican and her boobs were smaller! Good times.

nowherelikehome - Bless you and your husband. What you guys are doing is great. I just wish the authorities could figure out where these animals are coming from and talk to the people about responsibility.

Whether the situation involves donkeys or dogs, people have got to realize they can't just dump their pets when they become too much trouble or too expensive. Especially in light of our crappy economy, people need to think about how much it costs before they get a pet! As a community, we need to do more to teach pet responsibility. Please, always spay and neuter your pets!

On a lighter note: I think the donkey may have been out campaigning for the Democratic party!

I think that the animal control officers here in Dyer County get all kinds of crazy calls and do their absolute best to get the animal under control and into a safe environment. I would like to note, though, that when they do get a call concerning a horse, donkey, cow or bull they tend to rely on another individual to come round the animal up, get it into a trailer and provide pasture for it until the owner can be found. The individual in question would be my husband and I can't tell you how many times he has been called in the wee hours of the morning to come catch and transport a large animal. (If the animal in question is a horse, I usually accompany him. On one occasion we were called at 2:00 a.m. to retrieve a pony that had escaped injury when it's pasture mate had been struck by a car and killed.) The animal is placed in one of our pastures and remains with us until the owner comes forward to claim it. In the case that no one claims the animal, it remains with us in a safe, loving environment - well fed and well cared for by animal lovers. I applaud our animal control officers but thought it wouldn't be a bad thing for the folks in Dyer County to know that there is a Guardian Angel in Dyer County who is always available when a large aniaml is in need. He isn't reimbursed in any way for the work he does - he's just glad he can be of help. The little donkey that was picked up recently is happy as can be in our back pasture has found new friends in my horses and is getting to know a herd of cattle very well.
