Residents may expect a rise in electricity rates

Tuesday, August 19, 2008
A substantial rise in coal costs is expected to raise wholesale electricity prices by 18 to 25 percent, effective Oct. 1, according to Dyersburg Electric System President and CEO Jimmy Williamson.

Williamson reported to Power Board members on Friday that increased coal costs will more than double the base price of electricity for users across the board at the beginning of October. Williamson expects an official announcement by TVA at its Aug. 20 meeting.

"Coal has now become a world commodity, so it will be shipped where the prices are the highest," said Williamson, who said the price of coal has risen from $30 per ton to its current price of over $70 per ton. "The bulk of TVA's base load generation is coal -- 50 to 60 percent of the power generated by TVA is generated by coal. And the peaking power is (created) with natural gas, which is also going up. The FCA (Fuel Cost Adjustment) is supposed to fluctuate, but the way TVA applies the FCA charges, the FCA charge is always lagging when the rate goes up. It always lags when the price goes down, too, but we haven't seen that very often.

"The FCA portion of Quebecor's last bill was (roughly) $47,000," continued Williamson. "If the FCA increases as predicted by TVA, the same usage could approach $150,000 in October. On my personal bill at home, (the FCA portion was) $19.20. If my consumption doesn't go down, it will be $60 in October."

Williamson told members of the Power Board that while rates for electricity in Kentucky are lower than Tennessee, TVA prices are in line with Georgia rates and lower than the rates of power companies in the southeast region.

"Everything is going to be subject to that increase in coal," said John Lannom.

"The bottom line for any of us is energy is going up," said Dwight Hedge.

"If you don't have nuclear or hydro, you are at the mercy of the world commodity market," said Williamson. "Bankruptcies have been a problem for us this year. Now this increase in energy is not going to help anything at all. The TVA Board meets Aug. 20 and that's when we'll get some news."

Don't forget employee raises. Also the CEO likes his big figure income.

If they would collect the money owed by Bekaert, they wouldn't have to raise rates! Looks like we are picking up the tab.

I met a 92 year old woman in Henderson County recently. She was looking for a job - said she was so bored she'd do anything, shell peas, stuff envelopes. She found a part-time job sorting papers. I love smart, ambitious women, don't you?

youknowimright, I can relate to your post. I was a customer of FD years ago and had a bad experience or two. I had hoped they had improved. That's why I have few complaints about DE. And oh those rate increases - in my next life I'm coming back as a millionaire.

dang and already can't buy groceries...can't buy gas....now guess I'll be living in the dark... Thank you DES your my freaking hero..Just take all the good out of life don't ya except your rich customers you cater to them!

I wish Dyersburg Electric would buy out Forked Deer and consolidate to cut costs to the entire region. But make sure DE buys out FD, not the other way around. FD is horrible in every way.

Fixed income inhibited customers get ready for another slapdown right? We wont be able to enjoy

the "Golen Years"! Wont be able to afford to drive to the store but what the Heck we will not

be able to afford the groceries anyway! Now we wont be able to have comfort in our home? It is

all linked to the price of foreign purchased oil

which can be linked in turn to our leaders in D.C. which will not view the picture in front of them. If only they had to spend their their ret=

irement with income related to the way they do their job! Our servents? Sure!!!!

maybe the DES needs to get rid of some of their crew cabs trucks with only 1 person riding in them?>Maybe the CEO could take a 10% pay cut and help out a lot of people? Thought the TVA was nuclear powered or use the Tn river to turn the generators?

-- Posted by sid36us on Tue, Aug 19, 2008, at 8:26 PM

Wow, isn't this rate increase oh so close to the mfg plants claiming bankruptcy and sure the TVA is going to raise the cost but isn't 25% a little too much, or what is the word? Goughing!!!! This should do a little more to pad the DES bank account...not like they are broke anyway...Let's see, companies belly up and the people that pay their bills have to pick up the deficit...unreal but I am sure complaints will rush in to the bldg located on E. Court soon enough....and sad but true they will be justified for the most part...
