Newbern City Board honors Dyersburg Ponytails, OKs truck purchase

Thursday, August 21, 2008
The members of the Dixie Girls Softball team the Dyersburg Ponytails each received a key to the city of Newbern from the Board of Mayor and Aldermen Tuesday, Aug. 19.

The Ponytails also received a copy of a proclamation delivered by Mayor K.W. Dennison. The proclamation reads as follows:

"Whereas, the parents, family members, friends, fans and community supported the remarkable run of the Ponytails'; and

Whereas, the Ponytails', through the receipt of excellent leadership, training, support and motivation from their coaching staff; and

Whereas the Ponytails' determination, hard work and dedication earned this team and this community its first Dixie Girls Softball World Series Championship; and

Whereas, the Ponytails' perseverance, dedication and team spirit produced a remarkable Dixie Girls Softball Team;

Now therefore, I, K.W. Dennison, Mayor of the City of Newbern, on behalf of its citizens, do hereby recognize the honor you have earned for yourself, for your family, and for your community. You have also earned our deepest admiration and appreciation."

The board also approved the purchase of an electric utility truck for the price of $138,000. Although they did receive a lower bid for a used vehicle, this was the lowest bid received for a new truck.

Rosalind Green, the Newbern Utilities office manager, spoke with the board about the upcoming increase in electric prices. Newbern receives its electricity from the TVA, which is planning an increase.

"We are looking at a pretty significant increase in price," said Green. "About 17 to 20 percent. That translates to about $15 a month for residential customers."

Green also stated that the city had purchased its gas for the next two months at $8.23 per decatherm, the same price as last year, but are holding off on buying for the rest of the year in hopes that the price may fall.

Way to go softball player...ya'll done a great job and have done something to be proud of. Trust me when I say, officials may not notice but the good citizens of Dyer County do. Congrats on a job well done.

Mayor Holden and Hill have done alot for us. They saw all the teams off when they left and sent us letters to congratulate us. Mayor Holden came to Camden twice to see us play. I heard they are also honoring the ponytails at the opening ceremony of the fair. They also helped raise money for all the teams.

newbernite

well said - if the repressed citizens of Newbern hasn't noticed - the dead weight politicians in Newbern has done very little and they ask for your vote again - I wonder if the voters of Newbern have ever noticed that none of them come to your home and ask for your support - I guarantee they will be at Depot Days like a bunch of vultures flying over dead meat and will promise you one thing same ol bull - not a single one of them that sits on that board right now has Newbern and its citizens best interest up front of the line. We should find a Dark Horse candidate and do a write in vote - got to be someone who will make change - anyone know such a person?

Dyersburg officials won't do anything unless it benefits them. If one of the officials had a daughter or granddaughter on the team...maybe they'd get some recognition! Let's see how long it takes this comment to get deleted!

The Newbern mayor has not honored anyone since he has been in office, and the only reason he honored them was because this is an election year.

Glad to see the officals to honor the local girls? Cant Dyersburg do something also?
