Wednesday, August 27, 2008
Dyersburg State Community College recently announced one of its own has been selected by AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America to coordinate the Service Learning Program at the DSCC main campus.

2008 DSCC graduate Shawn Gilbreath of Dyersburg has been appointed to coordinate the Dyersburg campus's VISTA service learning program, a course designed to integrate classroom learning with community service needs. The program nurtures more productive citizens and encourages change agents in the community.

"As a learner-centered institution, Dyersburg State is committed to expanding learning initiatives such as service learning," said DSCC Vice President Dr. Mary Ann Sellars. "Students who participate will benefit from unique experiences that incorporate service-based projects with the course curricula."

The VISTA position is funded for the 2008-2009 school year by a grant through Tennessee State University. Gilbreath's role will be to match students with service learning opportunities in the community and on the campus. Volunteer opportunities include tutoring and helping others create a budget.

Katherine Markley works as the VISTA service learning coordinator at the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center in Tipton County.
