Adcock, only the seventh area resident in the 40-year history of the college to receive the award, was presented the honor by DSCC President Dr. Karen Bowyer in front of almost 200 full-time DSCC faculty and staff members at last week's annual Fall Update. The award acknowledges extraordinary service to the college.
"Mr. Adcock is a lifelong and fervent advocate for education," said Bowyer. "Long before Dyersburg State Community College began formal fund-raising activity, Bill Adcock was sponsoring scholarships for the college. He has supported Dyersburg State Community College every year since we began formal fund raising."
A member of the DSCC Foundation Board since its inception in 1988, Adcock served as chair from 2000-2006.
"As chair of the Foundation, he gave generously of his time, attending meetings at the request of the college several times each month," said Bowyer. "He has served as a tireless advocate for Dyersburg State Community College as Foundation Chair and in various forums such as chambers of commerce and meetings with legislators."
Adcock has also served the community in many other capacities.
He was named Outstanding Businessman of the Year by the Dyersburg-Dyer County Chamber of Commerce in 1981, Outstanding Young Man of the Year by the Dyersburg Jaycees, and recognized by the city of Newbern for 30 years of service. He has served as president of both the Newbern Rotary Club and the Newbern Lion's Club, Chair of the West Tennessee Boy Scout Fund-Raising Drive, served on the Newbern Planning Commission, the Citizens Committee for Better Schools and Newbern Library Board.
In addition, he has been a United Nations Delegate for Business and Labor, Vice Chair of the U.N. Day Committee, a Jaycee, a Shriner, Dyer County High School Advisory Committee member, an American Heart Association volunteer and a member of the board of Security Bank.
A veteran who served in Korea, Adcock attends First Baptist Church, Newbern, where he has served as chairman of deacons, Sunday school superintendent and a Sunday school teacher.

Congratulations Mr. Bill Adcock. I remember you looking much younger about 28 years ago when you gave me my first after school job. I think you had black hair then, but you have aged gracefully and still look very distinguished. God Bless you and your family...
This is an honor presented to a fine person. I don't think many people realize how important Mr. Adcock has been to the Newbern and Dyersburg area. I, too, remember him with a little darker hair, but I'm sure he would say the same about me.
Congratulations to Bill and his family. Well deserved.
