Newbern board names Creasy judge; revisits dog ordinance

The Newbern Board of Mayor and Alderman had several issues on their agenda at the monthly meeting on Tuesday.

The board voted to appoint Jason Creasy as the new City Court judge.

Creasy was the only applicant at the time of the vote.

Several attorneys were interested in the position, but had to remove their petitions due to conflicts.

Jerry Magnum spoke to the board about his concerns with the dog ordinance that was passed in Newbern last year.

After listening to Magnum's comments about an attack against him and his own dog, Alderman Olen Parker motioned that the city ordinance be revised to include provisions that reflected the state laws about vicious dogs.

The city received one bid for a new meter reader truck that is to be bought.

After some discussion it was decided that bids would be reopened with the intention of looking at smaller-model trucks that get high gas mileage.

The TVA rate increase that will go into effect Oct. 1 will be passed along to residents of Newbern.

Alderman Bill Parks suggested that the city absorb a portion of the 20 percent increase, and was the only board member to vote against the rate increase.

The city purchased the remainder of its natural gas for the year at the price of $8.05 per decatherm, 18 cents lower than last year's price.

A political forum is being planned for Oct. 6 for mayoral and alderman candidates.

The board approved the use of the courtroom for the forum if there were no legal conflicts.
