James L. Norman, 86, of Muskogee, Okla., formerly of Dyersburg, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008.
He was sales manager and co-owner of the Bebb Floral Company. He attended the University of Tennessee and graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in entomology. He did graduate work at the Univer-sity of Oklahoma. A position with the Army Corps of Engineers taking malarial mosquito surveys brought him to the Muskogee area.
He was instrumental in the organization of the Oklahoma Ornithological Society in the 1950s and has remained an active member. Jim held leadership roles in numerous organizations including Indian Nations Audubon Society, Oklahoma Native Plant Society, Oklahoma Academy of Science, Muskogee Garden Club, and Kiwanis Club. He also served as deacon and elder at First Presbyterian Church.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ann Brizendine officiating. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. Bradley Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marion Norman; three daughters, Mary Dawn Mott and husband, Keith, of Tulsa, Okla., Laura Schwarz of Charleston, S.C. and Molly Kennedy and husband, David, of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Lt. Col. Joe R. Norman and wife, Peggy, of Dyersburg; and six grandchildren, Emily and Blake Mott, Tara Schwarz, and Andrew, Nathan, and Claire Kennedy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Nathan and Dawn (Smith) Norman.
Pallbearers will be Keith Mott, Nathan Kennedy, David Kennedy, David Gill, Blake Mott and Andrew Kennedy.
