Mayor John Holden and the full city board were on hand last night to discuss the loss of WPSD in Paducah, Ky. and KFVS in Cape Girardeau, Mo. from the CableOne programming lineup. Board members also discussed the city's close call at losing WBBJ in Jackson.
"We got to keep Channel 7, which made a lot of residents very happy," said Cable Committee Chairman Freeman Dudley after sharing the minutes of a cable committee meeting from Monday, Dec. 29.
Dudley and the committee met with CableOne General Manager Elvis Brown last Monday morning after a letter from CableOne announced the loss of the three channels effective Jan. 1.
"Channel 3 was out this afternoon," said alderman Bob Kirk. "That's one reason we need to keep Channel 12 as a backup."
"It seems to be worse since the meeting," said alderman Dennis Moody, who said one of the cable channels went off the air during the last two minutes of a football game this weekend. "What channels (they) are not dropping, you can't see. They said they are going to give us Animal Planet -- isn't that already on 37?"
Moody requested Holden contact AT&T, which recently included Dyersburg in a statewide bid to offer cable services. Moody also asked Holden to confirm that CableOne currently owes the City of Dyersburg a large amount of money.
"That is my understanding," said Holden.
"We are four months into the new (fiscal) year without a contract," said alderman Lewis Norman.
Holden said the city and CableOne disagree on the definition of 'gross revenue' in their contract and are currently working out the problem.
"I'll contact AT&T and find out what their plan is," said Holden.
The board had no new business, old business or bids to discuss in the meeting.
In alderman reports, alderman Bob Kirk asked for a report on the cost of improvements to the stoplights at the intersection of Troy and Oak, and noted that falling gas prices may positively affect the budget.
"The generosity of this community never ceases to amaze me," said alderman Bart Williams in his report. "In these tough economic conditions (I applaud) all those who packed boxes, picked an angel off a tree, made a bid, donated a gift, rang a bell. ... This is a great community to live in."
Dudley requested a roundtable meeting where board members could discuss encouraging residents to shop at home.
"(We consider) Jackson the hub city in West Tennessee," said Dudley. "(But) all the little cities around us like Humboldt are gearing up to be hub cities, too. The more we let these other cities get ahead of us, the farther there is for us to go."
Holden discussed "Shop Dyersburg First" initiatives by the city and the Chamber of Commerce including full-page ads in the State Gazette listing local businesses throughout the Christmas shopping season.
"(We even have 'Shop Dyersburg First') on a couple of our sanitation trucks," said Holden.
Alderman Shannon Walker asked City Purchasing Agent Greg Williams if the city has recently purchased natural gas for its supply.
"We have 80 percent bought through March at $7 to $8," said Williams. "And 50 percent through the summer ranging from $6 to $7."
Williams said the city also has a percentage of natural gas purchased through November averaging approximately $5.60, and that he estimates after closing out December and January records that the city has saved a substantial amount of money through the Munigas discount.
"I expect (the savings) to be just shy of $700,000," said Williams. "We've been able to pass that savings on to our customers."
Williams expects to have the final figures of the Munigas savings in mid-February.
Walker also asked City Treasurer Steve Anderson if the city was on track with the budget. Anderson confirmed that it is.
"I've heard favorable comments on the light at Troy and Oak," said Norman in his report.
"I tried to hold this in, but I'll have to let it go," said alderman Charles McCright, who said he recently took part in an energy discussion at the state school board meeting. "Future City has its lights on all the time. I wish we could give some thought to that because of the economy."
Holden said that the city will take part in a free energy audit of its municipal buildings on Tuesday, complimented Anderson and his staff on completing the city's audit by Dec. 30, and welcomed Freeman Dudley back after his illness.
"Freeman, I'm glad you're back," said Holden. "It's good to see you."

If Dyersburg thinks that AT&T's U-Verse service is going to be a savior, they're sorely mistaken. just read the online reviews of the service.
anything would be better than cable one
Mr. Holden, contact Road Runner and other cable companies to solve our problems. ATT is an awful company with an awful history.
AT&T would be a very bad choice if their cable service is like their phone service. This should be very-well-researched prior to choosing. We use the internet 10 times more than cable TV. I hope they remember that the internet is extremely important and necessary for many people, and make sure that they have a fast, reliable provider. CableOne has been wonderful for the internet service they provide. I am in collge online and have been for several years. They are very reliable to be "up," and the 8 MB download speed is worth every penny. I have been very unhappy with CableOne's digital TV for a long time. Rates go up, and picture quality just keeps going down. We have called them many times about terrible picture quality, and they just keep telling us "it's just that channel." That is not acceptable when I pay you $150 per month IMHO.
People do not 'shop' in Dyersburg because Wal Mart is the only place to go and the mall might as well close its doors because it has more vacancies than tenants. People go to Jackson because it is close and they have something Dyersburg will never have - choices.
THE MAYOR WANTS US TO SHOP AND BUY IN DYERSBURG, DYER COUNTY BUT THE SAD FACT REMAINS WE HAVE NO STORES HERE JUST WALMART AND A HALF EMPTY MALL WHICH WILL LEAVE SOON IF SOMETHING IS NOT DONE. IF YOU WANT TO HELP US BRING IN A NEW SUPERMARKET OR TARGET. THE DAYS OF THE HOME OWNED SHOPS ARE GONE BECAUSE WE CAN NOT AFFORD THEIR PRICES.
all i have is my internet threw cable one and it runs me 49.00 a month.it sure would be nice if a new company could come in with cheaper prices.i may have to go to dial up and we all know what a pain that is.
we need something, last night ch 3 was off air more than it was on, need ch 12 back badly
CableOne is not a good cabel provider. Their internet is wonderful. My bill is $126.00 a month. That includes cable and internet, no movie channels. My bill started out at $101.00. My bill has gone up and service has went down!!! ARGH!!!
PLEASE look into Charter Communications. My husband and I have lived in two seperate cities that offer Charter Service and loved their service. Since moving to Dyersburg, we have not been pleased with the service that CableOne offers at all. We have tried the dish companies to no avail, and sadly enough if you can imagine it, they are worse than CableOne. I am afraid that AT&T will only be worse if their phone service is any indication to what is to come. Charter is a great provider and the rates that we were paying as Charter customers is comparable to what we are paying now for CableOne, but we had more channels and more reliable service.
By the way, THANKS to all the aldermen that voted in favor to the new light at the corner of Troy and Oak streets. I have sat at that light countless days for up to seven or eight minutes waiting on a green light. Talk about starting your day off right! :) Now I have cut almost ten minutes off of my commute just because of one stop light. Please continue to make smart decisions that actually benefit members of our great city! Thanks for all you do!
I've got Charter it is awesome 10 MB internet for 25 dollars a month is insanely cheap plus the cable channel selections are way better than Cable One and comparable to Direct TV or Dish Network. Service is great also.
i went to cableone and got a bundle package for cable tv, internet, and phone services and saved money from what at&t charged for phone and internet services.at&t stinks on their phone services, they have no good deals for seniors and your bills is always different each month not what they said it would be. i have not had any trouble with cable one. i would shop dyersburg but u need to get a kmart or something in here every since walmart revamped their stores their prices have gone up and they have done away with layaway. when i ask why 1 employee stated they were trying to attract a different kind of clientle. and the mall is half empty and prices to high.
please listen, please do check charter and consider it for our next choice for cable service,i dont think AT&T would be a good move, considering their phone service
AT&T just sent out the U-Verse packets to Nashville residents eligible..
16 MB download speed (impressive)
and the channel lineup was very impressive for price.
It's an option that needs to be considered, BUT only after a much better cable solution is brought in as well.
I have Charter and they have recently dropped all Memphis stations and several other channels and the price continues to go up.
I've seen many favorable comments about Charter Cable but I can tell you from my own experience in Washington state, they've not been a very good provider. I see nothing mentioned about Comcast. They were a great provider I had while living in Denver, CO area and a pretty good provider when I lived in San Jose, CA area. Why consider AT&T without considering Comcast? I served on the Telecommunications Committee in Lafayette, CO (suburb of Denver) and we had a technically skilled team help the city make the right choice for our community of 26,000+ residents. Doesn't Dyersburg have citizens with the rights skills to help the city make these kinds of decisions?
