Early in the morning on Wednesday, April 1, community leaders in Dyer County joined together to sign a proclamation declaring April "Keep Tennessee Beautiful and Litter Prevention Month."

For over 50 years, Keep America Beautiful Inc. has addressed litter by encouraging individual responsibility and community partnerships and advocating volunteerism. The non-profit organization's Great American Cleanup, the largest community improvement program in the nation, has served as a catalyst for residents ready to make a difference in their communities.

On Wednesday, Dyer County Mayor Richard Hill, Dyersburg Mayor John Holden, Newbern Mayor K.W. Dennison and Trimble Mayor James Davis joined Keep Tennessee Beautiful Coordinator Ersley McLemore and several volunteers to make a statement for litter-prevention efforts throughout Dyer County. Signing a proclamation announcing April Keep Tennessee Beautiful and Litter Prevention Month, officials acknowledged that "litter has become a community-wide problem and (community and civic leaders) have a strong interest in reducing it and eventually eliminating it."

The month will conclude with the Great American Cleanup, scheduled for Saturday, April 25. A kickoff and celebration are planned for that day at Okeena Park including sign-ins, collection sites, refreshments, soft drinks and entertainment. A rain date has been set for Saturday, May 2.

Residents or civic groups wishing to volunteer to clean an area in Dyer County may sign up at the Dyer County Courthouse or city halls in Dyersburg, Newbern or Trimble. Volunteers or citizens interested in more information may call Ersley McLemore at 286-0047 or 445-2303.
