Woman sentenced for embezzling $40,000 from bank

Tuesday, June 2, 2009
A Newbern woman has been sentenced to four months in prison for embezzling $40,000 from First South Bank in Dyersburg.

Kristi L. Deming pleaded guilty Nov. 24 and was sentenced April 21 in U.S. District Court in Memphis.

She was accused of embezzling $40,000 between May and July 2008 while working at the bank. She faced a maximum 30-year sentence, five years of supervised release, a $1 million fine and a $100 mandatory assessment. By pleading guilty, the prosecutor's office agreed to seek a sentence of no more than 15 months.

Deming was sentenced to four months incarceration in the Federal Medical Center in Lexington, Ky., which has a minimum-security satellite camp for female prisoners. She was to report to the prison no later than Friday.

After her release, Deming will be placed on supervised release for three years. She will participate in a home detention program for four months; will participate in drug and/or alcohol treatment as required; and will participate in mental health treatment. She is prohibited from incurring new credit charges or opening new lines of credit without a probation officer's approval and must provide any requested financial information.

Deming will be required to maintain full-time employment, but she is prohibited from working in any financial institution or in any fiduciary capacity.

Deming was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the court and $41,626 to First South Bank and its insurance company.

DANG.....I will lay down 4 months for $40,000....that is a joke....the last lady claimed a black man forced her into a safe and she only did a year at a funny farm in florida where her parents stayed and of course, the money was never recovered.....this case is no less than the crack and meth dealers....they will never see the million dollar fine...slap on the wrist..

$40,000 is no joke but (MS MAIDOFF'S) sentence is .Wonder why criminals like Dyer County Court system ,because there is no real punishment for crime here . The whole judicial system is a joke .Max sentence 30 years ,but she gets 15 months .She must have kin folk up there at the courthouse .What about interest from time of theft till full retribution is made (which will probably never happen )The bank would have made interest on this amount of money and who evers money was taken from an account or accounts which could have made interest just got screwed by the court system . You wonder why businesses don't want to come to Dyer County it's because the system isn't thinking with thought to other peoples or corporate interest only to the criminals interest.

all of us need to walk in others shoes before passing judgement, you have no idea what Kristi has been through or the things she has struggled with. The comments made here are hurtful to her and her family. I don't think any of us would want our wrongs printed in the paper, but if they were it would be filled with all of ours.

Sorry remember, but thats what the press does...As a adult, you're accountable for your actions...If this young lady has a problem, then get her some help..All these people are not lying about her....I could use $40,000 also, but i am not willing to go that route to get it...I'll just bust my butt and try to come back up like the average working class citizen...

I'm with DMASE on this one, she has to be held accountable for this. That includes the public humiliation that goes along with being a convicted felon. As far as "whatisthis" comments about rumors...you clearly don't know Kristi very well. They aren't rumors. This is just one of many actions that have hurt her and everybody involved in her life. She is one of those women that thrive off of sympathy and people feeling sorry for her. Hopefully, she will use this punishment to her advantage and stop the self destructive behavior that has wound her up where she is today. For her sake and everyone elses.
