Dyer County High School recognizes outstanding students during Honors Day

Dyer County High School held its Honors Day in front of graduating seniors' families and friends. Nine in-state and two out-of-state schools offered seniors both academic and athletic scholarships. Area business and scholarships were given to top seniors, rewarding them for years of hard work. Also, 11 graduating seniors enlisted in the military. Top graduates and undergraduates were also recognized for their achievements.
Dyer County High School recently held Honors Day to honor outstanding seniors. Principal Peggy Dodds welcomed a gymnasium full of parents, college representatives, central office staff, school board members, business and community members, relatives and friends. The Dyer County JROTC presented the colors and Brittany Cashion gave the invocation.

The schools listed below offered the following students scholarships during the ceremony.

Bethel College: Lori Henderson, Jeff Miller, Tyler Roberson, Craig Whitt and Chris Yeater.

Columbia State Community College: Chad Gammons, Jordan Patterson and Shea Thomas.

Dyersburg State Community College: Johna Likins, Catherine Mayberry, Trevor Murray, Jordan Patrick, Matt Peric, Rex Pierce, Lindsay Shelton, Jessica Tickle, Sheena Vaughn and Lekiah Yancy.

Freed-Hardeman University: Emily King.

Lambuth University: Craig Whitt and Chris Yeater.

Mineral Area College: C.J. Crittendon.

Murray State University: Seth Appleton, Brooke Lacy and Kelley Sanders.

Tennessee Technology Center: Eric Allen, James Baggett, Kevin Binkley, Ashley Fowler, Austin Gregory, Rumeal Haymon, Lia Hogshooter, Emily Kimbro, Amber Murchison, Brittney Powell, Dustin Reed, Preston Seratt and Colton Simpson.

Next, was the presentation of business/service scholarships to seniors.

The United States military also recognized seniors that had enlisted and were able to take advantage of military academic incentives.

United States Coast Guard: Tyler McGuire.

United States Marine Corps: Tony Howe and Brittany Moody.

United States Navy: Ronald Abston, James Norman and Eliot Rogers.

Dyer County Superintendent Dr. Dwight Hedge and Dodds acknowledged the top 11 graduating seniors: Seth Appleton, Trista Ferguson, Amber Henry, Jon Hickman, Emily King, Katie King, Brianna Klutts, Brooke Lacy, Nik Mula, Valerie Winters and Chris Yeater. (Appleton, Henry, Katie King and Winters had a 4.0 GPA)

Next, the high school awards were presented to students for outstanding contributions in extracurricular activities.

Art Club Scholarship: Kelly Thompson.

Band Scholarships: Jeremy Faulk, Katie King, Kenneth Long and Sarah Sampson.

Daughters of the American Revolution: Hannah Stewart.

Future Teachers of America Scholarship: Alyson Alley, Ashton Cherry, Beth Fisher, Emily King, Katie King, Briana Klutts, Brooke Lacy, Brittany McCollum, Molly Romo and Casey Stoneburner.

HOSA Scholarships: Leah Dunavant and Beth Henderson.

Leo Service Club Awards/Scholarships: Beth Evans and Valerie Winters.

National Honor Society: Katie King.

Scholar Athletes: Seth Appleton and Amber Henry.

Student Council Scholarship: Brianna Klutts, Molly Romo and Hannah Stewart.

U.S. Marine Corps Award: Seth Appleton, Jeremy Faulk, Jessica Jones, Katie King, and Tyler Webb.

Finally, the top undergraduates were recognized for their achievements.

Every year at Dyer County High School there is strong competition for the top 10 spots in each class. This year there are more than 10 students at the top of the freshman class because of the number of students who have a 4.0 GPA.

In the freshman class there are 42 students with a 4.0 GPA; they include Kelly Ables, Hollie Adcock, Hailey Atkins, Abbiegail Bingham, Kelsey Blackwell, Amanda Burns, Madyson Caton, Lindsey Caviness, Ethan Clark, Dylan Coleman, Emily DeSpain, Shelby Fultz, Holly Gibbons, Odessa Graham, John Haddock, Stacy Harris, Alisha Harrison, Quentin Haycraft, Brandon Hendren, John Hudson, Chris Humphries, Jonathan Jordan, Madison King, Emilee Lamb, Dillon Larue, Tiffany Lewis, Lafe Long, Josh Lowrance, Wesley Mcculloch, Thaddeus Medford, Kearstin Owsley, Adriana Pena, Catelyn Rose, Faith Rose, Rebekah Sargent, Zack Shaikh, Jamie Shelby, Spenser Shults, Drew Surratt, Kara Taylor, Spencer Via and Keith Wilcox.

The top 10 students in the sophomore class are Tyler Byrd, Caitlin Fogarty, Erica Mathis, Ben Pate, Emilee Ray, Shelby Ross, Caitlin Runions, Levi Tyler, Amanda Wright and Nicole Yeater.

The top 10 students in the junior class are Raelyn Brockway, Janelle Cleaves, Heather Hart, David Lewellyng, Lauren McCulloch, Heath Mclean, Chandler Sheppard, Cary Smith, Jaziree Smith and Brittany Sturgill.
