DHS students offered more than $6.5 million in college scholarships

Seniors at Dyersburg High School recently celebrated their academic accomplishments at the school's annual Senior Scholarship and Awards Assembly.

Community members, educators and representatives of colleges throughout the region gathered to offer $4,492,242 in scholarships to the DHS Class of 2009, not counting an additional $2,052,000 in HOPE and ASPIRE Scholarships received from the Tennessee Lottery.

The total? More than $6.5 million toward the higher education goals of seniors at the school. In fact, 17 members of the Class of 2009 were offered scholarships totaling over $100,000 over four years -- nearly three times as many students as the Class of 2008.

* Allison Agee was offered a total of $402,356 in golf and academic scholarships from Cumberland University, Maryville University, Rhodes College, Shorter College and the Tennessee Lottery.

* Kaitlyn Turney was offered a total of $390,000 in scholarships from Murray State University, Samford University, Southern Methodist University, Texas Christian University, Trinity University, Tulane University, Union University, Nucor Steel and the Tennessee Lottery.

* Hannah Chapman was offered a total of $247,000 in scholarships from Furman University, Grove City College, Rhodes College, Samford University, Taylor University, Union University and the Tennessee Lottery.

* Ryan Wood was offered a total of $242,000 in scholarships from Arkansas State University, Bethel College, Columbia State University, Freed Hardeman University, Lambuth University, the University of Alabama at Huntsville, Union University and the Tennessee Lottery.

* William Lay was offered a total of $220,000 in scholarships from Rhodes College and the Tennessee Lottery.

* James Northcutt was offered a total of $214,000 in scholarships from Rhodes College, the University of Memphis, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and the Tennessee Lottery.

* David Grueser, who was offered $160,000 from Furman University, Missouri University of Science and Technology, St. Louis University, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, the University of Memphis and the Tennessee Lottery.

* Adam Ford was offered a total of $157,996 in scholarships from Lambuth University, Louisiana State University, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, the University of Tennessee at Martin the Tennessee Lottery.

* McKenzie Shankle was offered a total of $148,100 in scholarships from Baylor University, Mississippi State University, Samford University, Southern University and the Tennessee Lottery.

* Kristen Kerr was offered a total of $146,000 in scholarships from Rhodes College, Samford University, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and the Tennessee Lottery.

* Katherine Hampton was offered a total of $144,000 in scholarships from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and the Tennessee Lottery.

* Ben James was offered a total of $123,200 in scholarships from Bethel College, the University of Tennessee at Martin and the Tennessee Lottery.

* Holly Owens was offered a total of $122,640 in scholarships from Union University and the Tennessee Lottery.

* Kristen Farrer, who was offered a total of $116,000 in scholarships from Middle Tennessee State University, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and the Tennessee Lottery.

* Jessica Light was offered a total of $113,000 in basketball and academic scholarships from Freed Hardeman University, the University of Tennessee at Martin and the Tennessee Lottery.

* Evan Jones was offered a total of $102,000 in scholarships from Lambuth University, Union University and the Tennessee Lottery.

* Amber Donaldson was offered a total of $100,449 in scholarships from Louisiana State University, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, the University of Tennessee at Martin, the Cancer Care Center and the Tennessee Lottery.

Other members of the DHS Class of 2009 awarded scholarships include Melashia Aguilar, who was offered $21,300 from Dyersburg State Community College and the Tennessee Lottery; Ian Alley, who was offered $5,000 in scholarships from Alpha Delta Kappa and the Tennessee Lottery;
