DSCC holds not one but two athletic banquets to celebrate successes.

Dyersburg, TN -- On Friday, May 8, players, parents, faculty and staff members gathered for the first of two banquets to celebrate the end of the athletic seasons. Two banquets were necessary because while previously scheduled end of season event was taking place, members of the Eagles baseball team were out of town playing for first championship game in school history.

The Eagles were facing Volunteer State for the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 7 and Tennessee Community College Conference title. After six complete innings, Dyersburg State had a 3-2 lead. All during the evening, text messages reports of the game scores were coming in on phones. However, at the close of play, the Vol State Pioneers won the championship game 10-4.

A second banquet to honor the accomplishments of the Eagle's baseball team was held on the following Monday, May 11. Both banquets were held at the Student Center on the Dyersburg campus.

The first presentation of the May 8th banquet was made by DSCC Vice President Mary Ann Sellars. She recognized the student-athlete from each sport with the highest grade point average. They were Jermael Bingham of Selmer for Men's Basketball, Johnn Wade of West Plains, MO for Women's Basketball, Kayla Coble of Pulaski for Softball, Cole Dickerson of Dyersburg for Baseball and Cynthia Mathis of California for Cheerleading.

During the course of the two events, awards were made to the following athletes:

Scholar Athletes -- those students whose grade point average was a 3.0 or higher for the Fall 2008 semester

Men's Basketball:

Derek Shannon of Milan, Jermael Bingham and Logan Chappell of McNairy, and DeJuan Taylor of Dyersburg

Women's Basketball:

Chelsea Brown of Hartsville, Bethany Oakley of Lyles, Kayla Tyus of Maury City, and Johna Wade of West Plains, MO

Softball:

Kayla Coble and Megan McNeese of Pulaski, Stephanie Pepper of Newbern, Jessica Robertson of Alamo, and Randi Walker of Union City

Baseball:

James Tyler Childress, Dylan Cupples and Cole Dickerson of Dyersburg and Robert J. Rayborn of Nashville

Cheerleading: Dorothy Blakeburn of Dyersburg and Cynthia Mathis of California

The following awards were presented for athletic accomplishments:

David Vinson of Memphis -- Most Steals, Assist, Charges

DeJuan Taylor of Dyersburg -- Best Free Throw Percentage

Nathan Poe of Cooter, Missouri -- Best Sportsmanship

Logan Chappell of Selmer - Leading Scorer, Highest Two-point Field Goal Percentage, Academic Standing of 3. 0 or higher

Maurice Taylor of Jackson -Three-point field goal %, All West TCCAA

Jermael Bingham of Selmer - Most Improved Player

Lennell Ragland of Memphis - Most Blocked Shots, Best Rebounder

Ricky Pickett of Ripley - Sophomore award

Kyle Shannon of Milan- Sophomore award

Women's Basketball:

Kala Tyus of Maury City - Rebound award and Two Point Field Goal Percentage award

Becky Caldwell of Fairview - Offensive Player of the Year, Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) All-Western Division Team

Victoria McLin of Dyersburg - Defensive Player of the Year, TCCAA All-Western Division Team

Johna Wade of West Plains, MO -- Highest Free Throw Percentage award

Brandi Alley of Union City -- Highest Three-point Field Goal Percentage award
